Toni has a B.A. degree in English
with a minor in Journalism and a
M.A. degree in English Literature
from Western Carolina University
(WCU). |

She was an adjunct instructor
in SCC’s English Dept for
three years before serving as the
LAC coordinator and teaching developmental
courses in reading and writing,
as well as a study skills course.
She continues to teach English courses
from time to time and to serve as
managing editor for the Milestone
student publication. Her teaching
experience also includes Mars Hill
College’s Adult Access program
and WCU’s Continuing Education
program. |

Maria has several years of
teaching experience from early
childhood to high school through
college. She currently teaches
English and Reading at SCC. She
has a B. A. and an M. A. in English

horses, cultural studies, and
the Appalachian region.

I am highly interested in Asian
cultures (Japanese culture
in particular) and intend to possibly
spend time in Japan as part of the
JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching)
program. |

I have an MBA degree from
Poland. In May 2007 I graduated
from SCC with AAS degrees in Business
Administration and Electronic
Commerce. I also have some teaching
experience from the Job Corps
in Cherokee and from Poland.
I enjoy working as a peer-tutor
and Learning Consultant in the
LAC, where I’m available
to help with accounting, business,
mathematics and computers. I want
to help SCC students develop their
full potential and achieve their
educational goals.
Within the last ten years I lived
and studied in Poland, Germany
and here in the USA. I traveled,
learned about other cultures,
and met many fascinating people.
Three years ago I started to work
and study here at SCC and I enjoyed
it very much. I’m glad to
work for the fourth best community
college in the USA!

Emily has been a part
of the Southwestern Community College
community for several years and
has an AA with Honors from SCC.
She is currently pursuing her BA
at WCU with a double major in Natural
Resource Management and English,
with a minor in History. She has
been honored by several publications
and contests for fiction, nonfiction,
and research writing. Emily also
owns Spring Street Café,
located in downtown Sylva, and lives
in Sylva with her five-year-old
daughter, Mason. Her interests include
American history and culture, literature,
writing, music and music theory,
and growing/making/serving really
good food. |

Sherry received a
B.S. in Nutrition & Dietetics
in 1987 from Western Carolina University.
She has taught a variety of students
ranging in age from preschool through
adulthood. She began teaching developmentally
challenged adults at Webster Enterprises
but soon was transferred to tutor
math at the Job Corps Center in
Cherokee, NC. She soon became a
valuable asset to the Corps and
was promoted to a math teaching
position. When this center closed,
she was welcomed at another Job
Corps location. Currently, she is
closer to home at the Jackson Campus
where she teaches developmental
reading, developmental English,
and study skills/college success
courses. She is enthusiastic about
teaching and supporting students
who are willing to persevere in
order to accomplish their goals.
Sherry thinks that we all can learn
something every day, no matter our
age, and believes we all are capable
of learning. As a Learning Consultant,
she can assist with writing papers,
grammar, reading, and basic math.
She enjoys organic gardening, camping,
creating fiber arts, reading, and
spending time with her family.

Engineering from the University
of Central Florida and am three
or four courses shy of a second
bachelor’s degree in environmental
engineering. I am currently enrolled
here at Southwestern in the Automotive
Systems program. |

I have worked as both a mechanical
and an environmental engineer. The
mechanical role was a test engineer
in jet engine development. The environmental
role was a project engineer in a
consulting firm dealing with hazardous
waste disposal. |

I have studied Automatic Control
and Applied Informatics for three
years in Romania, my home country.
Now I am a dual enrolled student
at Southwestern Community College
and Western Carolina University,
working toward my bachelor’s
degree in Applied Mathematics. I
plan to major also in Computer Science
and minor in Spanish. |

I am currently preparing to
finish my B.A. in both English/Literature
and Philosophy from WCU. From
there I will work toward my M.A.
in Literature.
I am an SCC alumnus and have
worked here in previous semesters
as a tutor for Student Support
Services. I can help in any area
of writing and many areas of Social
Science.
