Meet our Macon Campus Staff

 Denise Barton, Learning Consultant
Denise Barton
· Denise holds a B.S. in accounting from Virginia Tech and a diploma from The Children's Institute of Literature in Writing for Children and Teenagers. She has homeschooled her five children. Denise enjoys helping students through the writing process. Her personal interests include reading, sewing, and learning.

 Wes Barton, Learning Consultant
Wes Barton
· Teaches Survey of Mathematics (MAT 140) at Macon Campus.
· Taught Developmental Mathematics (MAT 060 and 070) at Jackson Campus 2002-03.
· Can tutor students in Math, Chemistry, and Physics. Willing to assist in other subject areas as well.
· Earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.S. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from Naval Postgraduate School. Pursued additional graduate studies in Mathematics at Western Carolina University.
· Retired (early) as naval officer in 1995, having served as nuclear submariner, meteorologist, oceanographer and instructor.
· Taught high school math and science 1995-2002.
· Also works part time as administrator at First Alliance Church.
· Is a devoted Christian who is still very much a work in progress.
· Is married with five children, ages 8 to 23. Wife Denise also works in the Macon Center LAC.
· Interests include most sports, reading, music and keeping up with his kids.

 Art Buesch, Math Consultant
Art Buesch
· Teaches Developmental Mathematics (MAT 060 and 070) at Macon Campus.
· Can assist students with Math, Chemistry, and Physics. Willing to assist in other subject areas as well.
· Earned B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering in 2000.
· Before switching to a career in teaching, has worked in a variety of industries, including a large petrochemical refinery (corrosion engineer - TX), steel mill (metallurgical engineer - AR), diaper manufacturing (process engineer - MO), and heavy equipment manufacturing (project engineer and management - NC).
· Has plans to begin coursework towards master’s degree in either mathematics or physics this year, opening more doors for teaching opportunities.
· Interests include family (currently engaged), anything and everything outdoors, MMA, and learning about the world we live in.

Patri Cabe, Learning Consultant
Patri Cabe
· Patri teaches Introduction to American Government and Business Law at the Macon Campus. She has a BA in Political Science from WCU and a law degree from the University of Mississippi. She is available for tutoring and assistance in social sciences and humanities classes. She has a four-year-old daughter named Cassie.

Kathy Godsey, Reading and Study Skills Instructor and Learning Consultant

Kathy Godsey

 
Kathy teaches Improving College Reading (RED 090), Study Skills (ACA 115), and Professional Transitions (ACA 220) at the Macon campus. Having earned a BA degree in art education and an MA in Principalship and Educational Leadership, she has many years of experience teaching students with special needs and learning challenges, as well as teaching HS fine arts and drama. She has served as a teacher training coach and in other administrative roles, including principal of an urban school.

Kathy believes that all students can achieve whatever they are willing to work toward. She can help with writing papers, editing, reading, and using research strategies across the curriculum. She assists students in a variety of content areas: English, writing, social sciences, art history, and computer skills. She loves working in the LAC, helping individual students to find success in their assignments and courses.

Kim Hartman , Sociology Instructor and Learning Consultant

Kim Hartman

 
Kim teaches Introduction to Sociology and Social Problems at the Macon Campus. She earned her BA in Sociology and Philosophy from Rollins College in 2007 and her MA in Sociology from Boston College in 2009. She is originally from Florida but loves the NC mountains. Before relocating to Western North Carolina, Kim worked as an elementary school autism therapist in Sudbury, Massachusetts. In addition to teaching and tutoring at SCC, she is taking classes at WCU to work toward Special Education teacher licensure. Her interests include singing, gardening, and social justice work. She is available to tutor in English, writing, and the social sciences and she is very excited to be working in the LAC!

 Grace Kehrer, Learning Consultant

Grace Kehrer

· Grace teaches developmental English and Reading courses. She also teaches college-level Student Success, English, Reading and Humanities courses. She is eager to help students with their English writing assignments as well as answer basic psychology, sociology and computer questions.

Grace earned her BA degree in Humanities at the University of Central Florida, and her MA in English literature at the University of South Florida. She also holds an Educational Specialist degree in Community College Administration. Three years ago, Grace retired as the Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities at Middlesex Community College in New Jersey. She enjoys teaching and working with students. When she is not teaching, she is trying to turn her vacation house in Franklin, NC, into a home. If Grace has any spare time, she loves reading and movies and going to the theatre.

Shelly Nixon, Learning Consultant

Shelly Nixon, Learning Consultant, Macon Campus

  Shelly M. Nixon is available for tutoring and assistance in English, mathematics, basic computer skills, and science at the Macon Campus. She also teaches English, study skills, and reading courses.
  Shelly currently holds a B.S. in chemistry from Eastern Michigan University as well as an M.L.S. in Women’s and Gender Studies from the same institution. She currently is completing her coursework at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in the Master’s of Liberal Arts program. Her thesis writing began in January 2009, and she really, really hopes to graduate in December 2009.
 

Shelly's previous employment includes serving as an educator in a variety of capacities as well as nonprofit work. Her interests include laughing, drinking tea, petting cats, reading, hiking, playing piano, and enjoying lots of family time.

Bill Vaughters , Learning Consultant

Bill Vaughters

 
Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at the University of Florida and masters’ degrees in business and industrial engineering from the University of Miami. After a thirty-year career with an electric utility, he took an early retirement and taught math for thirteen years at Valencia Community College in Kissimmee, Florida. He retired from Valencia in May 2007 and was granted distinguished Professor Emeritus status.
Bill found the years at Valencia to be the most rewarding of his professional career. In 2007, he and his wife, Jeanne, retired to Franklin to live in the mountains that they love. Bill’s personal interests include his family, especially his grandchildren; photography; bowling; traveling; and spectator sports, especially college football.
Bill is offering tutoring in science, math, and computer skills at the Macon Center LAC.
