from Virginia Tech and a diploma
from The Children's Institute
of Literature in Writing for
Children and Teenagers. She
has homeschooled her five
children. Denise enjoys helping
students through the writing
process. Her personal interests
include reading, sewing, and

heavy equipment manufacturing

this year, opening more doors

Professional Transitions
(ACA 220) at the Macon
campus. Having earned
a BA degree in art education
and an MA in Principalship
and Educational Leadership,
she has many years of
experience teaching
students with special
needs and learning challenges,
as well as teaching
HS fine arts and drama.
She has served as a
teacher training coach
and in other administrative
roles, including principal
of an urban school. |
Kathy believes
that all students
can achieve whatever
they are willing to
work toward. She can
help with writing
papers, editing, reading,
and using research
strategies across
the curriculum. She
assists students in
a variety of content
areas: English, writing,
social sciences, art
history, and computer
skills. She loves
working in the LAC,
helping individual
students to find success
in their assignments
and courses.

David has a B.A. in Philosophy
and a M.S. in Special Education
from Southern Illinois University.
He taught students from the
elementary to high school
levels for 28 years in St.
Louis, Missouri. |

As soon as he retired, Dave
moved to the mountains to
enjoy activities such as hiking,
biking, paddling and landscaping.
In addition to his position
in the LAC, he is also an
adjunct instructor at the
Macon Campus. |

Kehrer , Learning Consultant |
|
|
· |
Grace
teaches developmental English
and Reading courses. She also
teaches college-level Student
Success, English, Reading
and Humanities courses. She
is eager to help students
with their English writing
assignments as well as answer
basic psychology, sociology
and computer questions.
Grace earned her BA degree
in Humanities at the University
of Central Florida, and
her MA in English literature
at the University of South
Florida. She also holds
an Educational Specialist
degree in Community College
Administration. Three years
ago, Grace retired as the
Dean of Social Sciences
and Humanities at Middlesex
Community College in New
Jersey. She enjoys teaching
and working with students.
When she is not teaching,
she is trying to turn her
vacation house in Franklin,
NC, into a home. If Grace
has any spare time, she
loves reading and movies
and going to the theatre.

Nixon, Learning Consultant |

Shelly M. Nixon is available
for tutoring and assistance
in English, mathematics, basic
computer skills, and science
at the Macon Campus. She also
teaches English, study skills,
and reading courses. |

Shelly currently holds a
B.S. in chemistry from Eastern
Michigan University as well
as an M.L.S. in Women’s
and Gender Studies from the
same institution. She currently
is completing her coursework
at the University of North
Carolina at Asheville in the
Master’s
of Liberal Arts program. Her
thesis writing began in January
2009, and she really, really
hopes to graduate in December
2009. |

includes serving as an educator
in a variety of capacities
as well as nonprofit work.
Her interests include laughing,
drinking tea, petting cats,
reading, hiking, playing
piano, and enjoying lots
of family time.

II, Environmental Biology
and Zoology at the Macon Campus.
After earning a BS in Wildlife
Ecology and Conservation from
the University of Florida
(2003), he traveled west to
attain an MS in Biology from
Idaho State University (2007).
His scholarly interests focus
on wildlife ecology, animal
behavior, ornithology and
habitat conservation. Noa
is excited to finally live
in this part of the US because
of the relatively high amount
of biological diversity, outdoor
recreational activity and
good gardening opportunities
in the area.

| Bill
Vaughters , Learning Consultant |
| 
|
|
| Bill earned a bachelor’s
degree in electrical
engineering at the University
of Florida and masters’
degrees in business
and industrial engineering
from the University
of Miami. After a thirty-year
career with an electric
utility, he took an
early retirement and
taught math for thirteen
years at Valencia Community
College in Kissimmee,
Florida. He retired
from Valencia in May
2007 and was granted
distinguished Professor
Emeritus status. |
| Bill found the years
at Valencia to be the
most rewarding of his
professional career.
In 2007, he and his
wife, Jeanne, retired
to Franklin to live
in the mountains that
they love. Bill’s
personal interests include
his family, especially
his grandchildren; photography;
bowling; traveling;
and spectator sports,
especially college football. |
Bill
is offering tutoring
in science, math, and
computer skills at the
Macon Center LAC.
