Why take courses online?

On-line courses allow you to pursue your educational goals when and where it is most convenient for you. Traditional classroom courses may not be practical for today's busy working adults. With online courses, you can complete your coursework at times that won't conflict with your career and personal life.

What equipment will I need to take a class online?
To reach your class website, you need a computer connection to the Internet. As an SCC student, you are welcome to use our on campus computer labs during open lab hours. Libraries often have computers available for public use. Your instructor will inform you if your course requires specific software.
How will I get my course materials?
Your instructor will post course materials and assignments on the course website. You will usually have a text that accompanies the course. Most communication between instructors and students takes place by e-mail or using online discussion boards built into each class website.
Will I have to come to campus?
You can apply to attend SCC online at www.southwesterncc.edu/admissn/enrollment.htm. You may need to come to campus at the start of the semester to meet with your advisor, complete your registration, and purchase your text. Some courses may require that students come to campus for exams or an initial orientation. Contact your course instructor directly to see if your course will have any on-campus meetings.
May I take face-to-face courses too?
Of course! Many students like to take face-to-face courses as their schedule permits and these courses meet the certificate requirements.
Are online courses easier than face-to-face courses?
On-line learning does require a high level of self discipline. You may want to take the distance learning pre-assessment at www.southwesterncc.edu/distlearn/ready/pretest.htm. Students need to be comfortable reading and writing, since communication between students and teachers depends on written materials.
How long will it take to complete my course work?
Each course and each student will have different time requirements for completing course assignments. At a minimum, you should expect to work independently for as many hours as you would meet in the classroom for a face-to-face course.
How long will it take to complete my certificate?
We recommend that students begin their studies with no more than two online courses. The certificate can be completed in three semesters taking two courses each semester.
Will I meet with the instructor?
Throughout the class your instructor will communicate with you online to guide your learning experience. On-line courses are designed for you to complete them without face-to-face meetings with your instructor. Many SCC instructors keep regular office hours and will also meet with you by appointment.
What is the difference between a degree and a certificate?
An academic certificate is awarded after successful completion of 12-18 semester credit hours in a certificate-granting program. Certificate programs are designed for specific skill development. If you already have college degree or equivalent business skills, you may choose to pursue the certificate to give you a new skill set. A degree program will award an Associate of Applied Science degree upon the successful completion of 64-76 semester credit hours.
Can I use the Certificate course credits towards an Associate's Degree from SCC?
Each of the Certificate courses meet requirements for the Business Administration-Electronic Commerce Degree. Further, SCC currently offers 83% of the courses needed for the full Associate's Degree online.
