The purpose of the Early Childhood Education Program is to enrich the lives of children and their families by educating competent and caring early childhood professionals, and to provide opportunities for Southwestern Community College Early Childhood students that they would not otherwise have without an Associate Degree education.

The vision of Southwestern Community College's Early Childhood Education Program is to provide the knowledge base necessary for our students to become teachers who make informed decisions that improve the quality of early education for children and their families, especially in the Jackson, Macon, Swain counties, and the Cherokee Qualla Boundary Reservation. The Early Childhood Education Department utilizes curriculum in classroom instruction as well as field experiences to support the vision and mission of the program.

Transfer agreements between Southwestern Community College and other colleges or universities allow graduates of certain SCC programs to transfer credits towards a Bachelor of Science degree to the participating university or college. The amount of transferable credit varies among programs and colleges. Please refer to the specific agreements for details on transferable credits. The Early Childhood Education curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers.

Course work includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children.
