College / University Transfer Guide
Frequently Asked Questions |
| What
is the College Transfer Program? |
| |
The college
transfer program is designed
for you to take courses that
are equivalent to the first
two years of a college/university
education. You will take courses
in English, humanities, science,
math, history, social sciences,
and physical education/health.
You can complete the AA degree
in two years of full-time
study and transfer to a university
as a junior in most majors.
Or, you can complete the Transfer
Core Diploma in one year of
full time study and transfer
as a sophomore. |
| |
|
| Should
I choose the AA degree or
Transfer Core Diploma? |
| |
Students usually make
the decision based on how
quickly they want to get
to the university or based
on the major they plan to
pursue. If you want to live
on campus, join a fraternity,
or play in the band, then
you may want to transfer
as soon as you complete
the 44-hour transfer core
diploma. With the Transfer
Core Diploma, you transfer
as a sophomore, while with
the AA degree you transfer
as a junior into most majors.
Students who plan to pursue
specialized majors such
as architecture, engineering,
music, or pre-med may want
to transfer with the core
only because they need specialized
electives that SCC may not
offer. Most other students
choose the Associate in
Arts degree path because
it meets their needs for
both core classes and introductory
elective credits. |
| |
|
| Can
the college transfer program
help me get a fresh start
if I didn’t do very
well in high school? |
| |
Yes. SCC is an open-door
institution. We accept all
high school and GED graduates.
You can start with a clean
academic slate and possibly
even graduate with honors
and earn scholarships if you
focus on your education and
work hard while at SCC. Students
who have not completed minimum
course requirements in high
school need to finish the
AA degree, the Transfer Core
Diploma, or specific courses
in core areas as outlined
by the university. |
| |
|
| Am
I guaranteed admission into
a university?
|
| |
If you earn the AA degree,
you are guaranteed admission
into at least one of the 16
public universities in North
Carolina. To enter selective
university majors/ colleges,
you must meet admission requirements
as described in each university’s
catalog. |
| |
|
| How
many credits will transfer
to a university? |
| |
Under the Comprehensive
Articulation Agreement, up
to 64 hours of credit will
transfer. All courses in the
AA College Transfer program
of study are transferable
with a grade of C or better.
Some courses outside the AA
program may transfer based
on agreements between SCC
and specific universities.
See admissions or the College
web site for a list of additional
programs articulated for transfer. |
| |
|
| When
should I choose my long term
goal and major? |
| |
As soon as possible. If
you are secure in your long
term goal, then you can usually
select core and elective courses
that will lead toward that
goal as you move through the
AA College Transfer program.
If you need help choosing
a major, talk with your academic
advisor and with Patty Kirkley,
SCC’s Career Planning
Coordinator. |

| Southwestern
Community College is
consistently ranked
as one of the top colleges
in North Carolina for
success of university-transfer
students.
Our success comes from
a student-success oriented
philosophy and from
the following factors:
SCC
faculty and students
interact
in small classes with
current technologies.
Faculty advise students
and support their
success in the classroom
and beyond.
Successful transfer
students take advantage
of SCC’s strong
academic support systems
including free tutoring,
staffed learning assistance
centers, online tutoring,
library, career services,
and transfer advising
workshops.
At SCC, we know that
students need flexibility
in class scheduling
and learning modalities
so we offer most classes
in on-campus, online,
interactive television,
daytime, evening,
and hybrid options.
The strong
articulation agreement
between North Carolina
community colleges
and all 16 public
universities and over
50 private colleges
promotes a smooth
transfer.
At the bachelor’s
level, SCC
students consistently
earn higher GPAs
in the junior year
than students who
start at a state university.
SCC college transfer
graduates are well-prepared
for university-level
work.
Our reasonable
cost
makes it economically
possible to attend
college and prepare
for university transfer
with little debt.
Your education at
SCC will be a major
investment of time
and energy, but not
money.
