TEXTS: The Bedford Reader, Kennedy, Kennedy, and Aaron. 9th edition.    The Writer’s Brief Handbook, Rosa and Eschholz, 6th edition.  A dictionary.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the required first course in a series of two designed to develop the ability to produce clear expository prose. Emphasis is placed on the writing process including audience analysis, topic selection, thesis support and development, editing, and revision. Upon completion, students should be able to produce unified, coherent, well-developed essays using standard written English.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 

ESSAY: Five essays are required, approximately one every three weeks. Essays will be 3-6 typed, double-spaced pages in length and will be graded on content, effective expression and mechanics (spelling, punctuation and grammar).

EXAMS: There will be a midterm and final exam.

MINI-COMPOSITIONS: Nine short essays of one to two typed pages in length will be required. See the handout and the schedule of due dates.

VOCABULARY TESTS: Periodic tests of vocabulary encountered in your reading and classroom discussion will occur.

Assignments submitted late without an acceptable excuse will be graded a full letter grade less and will not be accepted after a week beyond the date due. Reuse of assignments for other classes without permission of the instructor will result in failure of that assignment.

Plagiarism of any kind will result in failure of the course.
