Career Assessment
The process of choosing a major or career often begins with assessment. Consider taking one of the assessments available to learn more about your interests, personality, skills/ abilities, and values. After taking one or more assessment(s), meet with the career counselor to discuss your results and generate ideas for majors and careers to research.

Your career counselor will help you define your concerns, sort out your feelings, and find your own answers. Self-assessment tests may be administered and interpreted during counseling. Each student's situation is unique and will determine the tests he/she takes, the length of time, and the time needed to interpret results. Tests offer an opportunity for a new perspective on your career options, but they cannot make better decisions for you than you can.

Keep in mind that no single test can tell you "what you should be" and that successful career planning may require more than one appointment.

Assessment Instruments:
Strong Interest Inventory
This inventory matches your interests with the interests of people who have been in career fields at least three years and are at least satisfied with their work. You may complete the inventory at home or come into the SCC Career Center to take it. To request a user name/password and to make an appointment for the interpretation of your results, call 828.586.4091, ext. 212 or e-mail p_kirkley@southwesterncc.edu.
Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory
The MBTI is the most widely used personality inventory in the world. This personality instrument is based on psychological types and temperaments. It provides information about your personality style and the way that you interact with the world. It is used to help you understand the relationship between personality, communication, and careers.

Contact the SCC Career Center to take the MBTI.
