Who
can be a part of GEAR UP?
The GEAR UP program is a discretionary grant
agenda designed to increase the number of students each
year and guide them to enter and succeed in postsecondary
education. GEAR UP has provided a six-year grant to Macon,
Swain, Jackson, and Cherokee to offer services for the middle
and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort
of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and
follow the cohort through high school.
How
do I join GEAR
UP?
You do not have to be selected to participate
in GEAR UP. If GEAR UP is at your school, then you are a
GEAR UP student.
Can
I participate in GEAR
UP if I am in New Century Scholars or Upward
Bound?
Yes, you can...and we encourage you to do so.
Is
there a cost for GEAR
UP services?
No. Most services and activities are free. Occasionally,
there may be a fee to help pay for materials or supplies,
or to help pay for a “self-supporting" class.
These special circumstances will be noted in any sign-up
materials for these special classes.
What
services does GEAR UP offer to help parents?
GEAR
UP offers a variety of workshops and events. Specifically
we offer information on college awareness, financial planning
for college, computer skills, and how to help their kids
with homework.
What
services does GEAR UP offer to help teachers?
Teachers and schools are our partners and we are able to
support them through organizing and offering opportunities
for staff development and matching funds for equipment and
supplies. We work with students as tutors and bring enrichment
opportunities that support curriculum objectives and goals.
We assist teachers with special projects and events that
help promote academic growth and awareness of college and
career opportunities.
What
about community partners?
The community is a great support and asset to
the GEAR UP Program. There are rewards and services that
help encourage our students to becoming apart of the community.
To name a few, interacting in job shadowing, encouragement
with incentives for good grades at the Fun Factory, and
donations to help fund Macon Middle School’s summer
program. These partners are helping us achieve our goals
in promoting a higher education. Anyone can help at making
this difference.
