GEAR UP -
   Events / Deadlines


A Home Study Skills Workshop will be offered by Southwestern Community College’s GEAR UP program on Thursday, Oct. 15. It will be held at the Macon Library meeting room from 7-8:30 p.m.

For more information, contact Sherry Tilson, Gear Up Coordinator/Macon County at stilson@southwesterncc.edu. The deadline for registration is Oct. 8. Childcare will be available, if requested in advance.
Franklin High School will host its first Parent Night of the year on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s Fine Arts Center. Representatives from the Guidance Office and Southwestern Community College’s GEAR UP program will give tips and answer questions on helping students prepare for graduation and beyond. For more information, contact Camille Tuttrup, Franklin High School GEAR UP readiness coach, at 524-6467, ext. 375.
Southwestern Community College GEAR UP will host Going to College Without Going Broke at Swain County High School on Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Laura Misner, the College Foundation of North Carolina Western regional representative, will give the presentation, which will focus on helping parents and students make sense of financial aid and find scholarships. All Swain County parents and students are invited to this free workshop. The following GEAR UP-sponsored activities and help sessions are available at Smoky Mountain High School for Fall 2009:
PSAT and SAT Test Prep

Available each Tuesday and Thursday during both lunches and after school from 3:15-4:15. Students may contact either their guidance counselor or Robin Hall in the GEAR UP Office for more information.
The Reading and Writing Center
·
Available each Tuesday and Thursday during both lunches.
Tutoring
·
Algebra I Tutoring is offered on Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:15-4:15 pm in Ms. Jodi Mathews' classroom.
·
Algebra II and Geometry Tutoring is offered on Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:15-4:15 pm in Ms. Tracy Brandt's classroom.
·
The National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta are offering tutoring in Reading and Math on Wednesdays during both lunches.
·
Additional tutoring is available any day after school from 3:15-4:15 upon request.
·
