GEAR UP - News


GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a discretionary grant program sponsored by the US Department of Education designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter into and succeed in post-secondary education. Southwestern Community College GEAR UP is active in Jackson County, Macon County, Swain County and Cherokee’s Qualla Boundary.
   
  Cherokee 7th graders visit Pack Place - Recently, the Cherokee Middle School 7th Grade class traveled to Asheville to visit The Health Adventure museum, where they participated in the Robotics Design and Mind Benders Programs.   LEGO winners - The Technology Slayers from Nantahala School claimed the Championship Award during SCC GEAR UP’s First Lego League Local Competition. Eight teams from GEAR UP counties competed in the challenge, which was called Smart Move and held on SCC’s Jackson Campus Nov. 21, 2009 . . . full story
  The SCC GEAR UP GREENWORKS! project has been highlighted in the November 2009 edition of The Southern Perspective which is a newsletter developed by the Southern Group of State Foresters.   GEAR UP Students attend Conservation Field Day - Recently 280 Macon Middle School seventh graders attended Conservation Field Day at Standing Indian Campground in Nantahala National Forest.
