Grady
Corbin Memorial Golf Tournament Raises $2,249 |
|
|
|
 |
Family
and friends raised more than $2,000 at the first-annual Grady
Corbin Memorial Golf Tournament earlier this fall.
The
tournament was held in Macon County at Mills Creek - the
golf course where Grady played countless rounds of golf
through the years.
"The
people at Mills Creek said it was the best they'd ever had
out there. So many people came to play that they had to
turn some players away," said Wilma Corbin. "I'm
so happy they asked me to come out there. I didn't know
a lot of the people who played, but meeting them was great.
The tournament provided closure for me. Our boys hadn't
planned to play, but they decided to at the last minute,
and it was so good for them. They felt like they were closer
to him just being out on the course."
Mike
Wood, the golf pro at Mill Creek for many years and a friend
of Grady's, said he and the family hope to make the tournament
an annual event.
"The
day was a great success," he said. "All of Grady's
friends and family were there, and Wilma was just glowing.
We got the tournament off the ground this year as a memorial,
and we expect to raise even more money in the years to come."
All money raised went to the Southwestern Community College
Foundation for the Grady Corbin, Sr., Scholarship Fund.
Grady, who passed away last year, served in a variety of
roles at Southwestern before retiring in 1993. He was a
continuing education instructor, student recruiter, admissions
director and director of the Macon Center.

Six
from SCC to Attend 'Leadership Jackson'
Beginning
this weekend, six members of Southwestern's faculty and staff
will attend this year's "Leadership Jackson."
Melissa Dodgins, Deb Klavohn, Melody Lawrence, Bill Lee,
Patti Long and Melissa Medlin will be among the 19 participants
this year.
Leadership Jackson 2002 is an eight-month community leadership
development program patterned after a successful nationwide
movement of over 500 similar programs.
In addition to informing participants about the issues facing
the county, the program is designed to encourage cooperation
and civic involvement, primarily through community service
projects.
Past
projects include developing the Jackson County Literacy
Council; founding a non-profit animal welfare group (SMART)
to assist the Jackson County Humane Society; planning the
Heritage Hills Mature Life Campus project for senior citizens;
constructing trails (including a handicapped access trail)
at Pinnacle Park; completing a beautification project for
Jackson County's Community Table; starting "Prescription
to Read," a WestCare Health System initiative to encourage
parents to read to their children; reorganizing the Jackson
County League of Women Voters and sponsoring candidate debates
prior to the primary elections; forming a coalition of organizations
and volunteers to fund and implement a new child care facility
in the county; and coordinating the efforts of the social
services and mental health systems in foster home recruitment.

Participates in Avon Breast Cancer Walk |
|
|
 |
Six months of training, one very close friend and $3,000 went
with Sherry Floerschinger to the 3-day Avon Breast Cancer
Walk October 5-7 in Atlanta, Ga.
Upon
hearing the news that a dear friend and old schoolmate -
Anita Owings - had been diagnosed with breast cancer, Sherry
was moved to do something.
"She
had gone to school with me - worked in radiology. And when
her doctor told her the results of her mammogram were fine,
well, she knew better," said Sherry.
"I
was flipping through Oprah's magazine when I came across
the 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. I knew I wanted to do
this, but I didn't really know if I could do this by myself.
I told my workout buddy that lives over in Haywood County
about it, and we agreed to do it together."
And
thus began the training for a 60-mile walk to raise money
for research and patient support. Sherry and her workout
buddy, Stacy Munn trained for six months - sun, rain or
wind - walking six hours a day up and down mountain roads,
tracks and trails.
Sixty
miles - 30 that were dedicated to women Sherry knows who
have survived or died from this disease - three days and
approximately $6 million were the end result of Sherry's,
Stacy's and 2,800 other walkers' efforts.
One million women in the U.S. currently have breast cancer
but do not know it and may not know about it for another
5-8 years. According to the Feminist Majority Foundation,
one in every 50 women runs the risk of having breast cancer
at age 50. By age 70, that risk rises to one in every 10
women.
If you or someone you know is interested in participating
in the 2002 Avon 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk, Sherry will be
happy to share her experiences with you. She can be reached
at ext. 359.
