What is JobsNOW?
Responding to North Carolina’s need to get people back to work, and to the call from Governor Bev Perdue that the NC Community Colleges undertake her JobsNOW initiative, the community colleges and the NC Department of Commerce joined together to develop and fund JobsNow, the infrastructure and resources necessary to help train North Carolinians in needed job skills and help rebuild North Carolina’s economy.

Welding Basics: (50 hours):
This course will teach basic welding skills necessary for student employment in the welding industry. The course includes the following topics: occupational orientation, welding metal, using tools to shape and cut metals, understanding weld tests, and safety. Lecture, demonstration and hands-on applications are the instructional methods used in this course.

Professional Office Management
(120 hrs.) This program will prepare the student to successfully work in an office environment. Topics presented: office management, computer business applications, word processing and QuickBooks. The student will also complete the Notary Public education class.

EMT – Basic – On-Line
This course is designed to instruct a student to the level of Emergency Medical Technician who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. This includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized service. CPR certification from the American Heart Association at the Health Care Provider level or at the Professional Rescuer level from the Red Cross is a pre-admissions requirement. Course work will be completed through on-line assignments, programs and class participation. Several Saturdays will be scheduled to complete the practical skills and testing. A state comprehensive written exam will be required at the completion of the class. An academic grade level reading test (TABE), is prerequisite (see below); a tenth grade reading level must be achieved. Book Cost: $110.00 Text and workbook (approximate).

Basic Law Enforcement Training: (BLET)
The North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training is a State accredited program designed to prepare entry level individuals with the cognitive and physical skills to become certified police officers and deputy sheriffs’. The course is comprised of 35 separate blocks of instruction. The commission mandated course, upon completion, will enable the graduate to be certified to work as a sworn law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina. Students must meet all BLET admission requirements. Contact the SCC Public Safety Training Complex, 828-369-0591, or visit the College’s web page, for a packet of information. Class size: Minimum 10, maximum 30. Some night and weekend classes will also be required. Day class meet 8A-6P M-F, evening class meets 6-10P M-TH and 8-5 most Saturdays. All admission requirements and required paper work must be completed and submitted prior to first class meeting. Book costs approximate $365. Student insurance optional. Uniform shirts and physical training attire also required, cost approximately $100. Applications must be submitted prior to the class orientation. Mandatory attendance at the orientation is required. Nurse Aide I
This course introduces basic nursing skills required to provide personal care for patients, residents, or clients in a health care setting. Topics include communications, safety, patients’ rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, emergencies, rehabilitation, and mental health. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to make application for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program. Examination necessary for listing on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry. Book fees, insurance, and material fees are also required. Course hours: 163

Wildland Firefighting
This training will prepare students to receive basic training in wildland firefighting techniques. The National Wildland Fire Suppression class, S190, S130, S110, L180 and I 100 will be presented. Course hours: 48

Two additional classes may be taken: Portable Pumps and Water Use (hours 24) and Fire Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface (hours 24). The classes will involve classroom and practical exercises.
