The following classes will be held at Public Safety Training Complex. All Continuing Education certification courses require the following pre-admission requirements.
CPR certification from either the American Heart Association, Health Care Provider level OR the Red Cross, Professional Rescuer level.
High School diploma or GED certificate (or higher diploma)
  AND
An academic grade level reading test will be given at the first class session; tenth grade level must be achieved.

Emergency Medical Services Training

CPR- Healthcare Provider – American Heart Association Health Care Professional CPR: This course is geared for health care profes¬sionals, lifeguards, emergency personnel, and other persons interested in learning adult, child and infant techniques for pulmonary resuscita¬tion, cardiac resuscitation, use of an AED, and foreign body airway obstruction for conscious and unconscious victims. (6-hours)

CPR & First Aid – American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid: This course reviews Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, use of an AED, patient assessment, medical and environmental emergencies, triage and blood borne pathogens in order for students to attain certifi¬cation in First Aid and CPR. Pre-payment required. (8-hours) $50

CPR- BLS Instructor Training –American Heart Association
Basic Life Support Instructor:
This course is geared for health care professionals, lifeguards, emergency personnel, and other persons in¬terested in attaining AHA BLS Instructor status. (8-hours) $50

Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS): This class emphasizes injury prevention, basic and advanced trauma management. Offered for EMT-Intermediates, Paramedics, RN’s PA’s and MD’s, the class covers advanced treatment of the trauma patients as well as basic management. (16-hours) $50

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): ACLS is geared toward experienced healthcare professionals including EMT-Paramedics, RN’s, “PA’s and physicians. The course focuses on advanced emer¬gency procedures used in treating patients suffering myocardial in¬farction and other critical cardiac syndromes. Pre-requisites include current CPR provider certification. (16-hours) $50

Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals: (PEPP) (w/ PALS Refresher) represents a complete source of pre-hospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed specifically to teach pre-hospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. (16-hours) $50

Medical First Responder/EMT: The class prepares students to treat ill or injured patients in the field. The class consists of basic emergency procedures including CPR review, basic airway management, assessment and treatment of medical and traumatic emergencies. The total 72 hour class consists of didactic and hands-on patient scenario training. Current AHA/HCP-CPR certification is required. An academic grade level reading test will be given at the first class session; tenth grade level must be achieved. $60 . Books approximate: $90

EMT-Basic: This course introduces basic emergency medical care. Topics include preparatory, airway, Cardiac Arrest/AED, patient assessment, medical emergencies, splinting and shock management, trauma, infants and children and special operations. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve North Carolina State or National Registry EMT-Basic certification. Current AHA/HCP or Red Cross Professional Rescuer-CPR certification required and an academic grade level reading test, (given at the first class session), tenth grade level must be achieved. Books approximately $100.

EMT-Intermediate: This course is designed to provide the necessary information for interventions appropriate to the EMT-Intermediate and is required for intermediate certification. Topics include automated external defibrillation, basic pharmacology, basic cardiac electrophysiology, intravenous therapy, venipuncture, acid-base balance, and fluids and electrolytes. Upon completion, students should be able to properly establish an IV line, obtain venous blood, utilize AEDs, and correctly interpret arterial blood gases. $65. Malpractice Insurance $35.50, uniform shirt $25. Student ID $1. Pre-req. must be EMT-Basic and current CPR-HCP.

Public Safety Program Entrance Examination (TABE Exam): This test is a re-quirement for admission into all EMS, Law Enforcement, and Fire Academy Certification courses. Students must score a minimum of 10th grade level for entrance in programs. The results from this exam are valid for one year. The Exam will be offered twice each quarter. For more information or to pre-register call 828-586-4091, ext. 221. There is no cost for this exam. The exam is offered weekly at the Macon Annex by appointment only.

EMT-Paramedic: This course is designed to provide the necessary information to meet the National and North Carolina standards for the Paramedic Curriculum. Pre-requisite- Current AHA CPR-HCP, EMT-Intermediate and Anatomy and Physiology. $65. Malpractice Insurance $35.50. Uniform Shirt $25. Student ID $1.

NREMT-Paramedic Refresher: This is a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician- 48 hour Paramedic Refresher. Required contents meet the Nationally Registered Paramedic refresher components. $60

Online Paramedic Refresher Topics: Three (3), three hour blocks of online Paramedic Continuing Education will be offered each quarter. Contact: tdoster@southwesterncc.edu for more information. $50
