Nursing

Nursing Assistant: The Nursing Assistant (NA) Training Program offers 163 hours of orientation (1 hr.), classroom (100 hrs.), clinical experience (48 hrs.), CPR training (8 hrs.) and testing (6 hrs.). Successful completion of the course involves not missing more than 6 hours of class, no clinical or CPR hours can be missed. Graduates are then eligible to sit for the State Competency Exam administered by Pearson VUE, Inc. The cost of the exam is an additional $96 payable to NACES.

After successful completion of the State Competency Exam, graduates will be registered on the North Carolina Department of Facilities Services Nurse Aide Registry.

The N.A. 1 can work under the direction of a RN, performing basic nursing techniques on clients who are sick or who have chronic health problems. One hundred and sixty five tasks are necessary, including personal care, turning, transferring, assisting with walking, lifting, exercising, feeding, administering enemas, taking blood pressures and vital signs, changing clean dressing and caring for the body after death. The tasks require the ability to see and hear accurately. Students are required to be able to perform fine motor skills with their hands.

Fees. Students must pay $192 to SCC for registration and malpractice insurance. Students must also pay an additional fee of $36 for supplies and all students must purchase the required text directly from the Bookstore prior to class. Also, students are required to present proof of insurance or purchase an accidental only policy through SCC for an additional $15 at time of registration.

Orientation. All students enrolling in the Nurse Aide Program at SCC are required to attend an orientation session held one week prior to the start of the class. Students will not be permitted to register without attending the orientation session. Students should bring their social security card, driver’s license, and immunization record to the first class. Also, if a third party is paying, an authorization letter should be sent on the first day of class.

Prerequisites. At least one week prior to class students will be required to take a reading test and pass at a 9th grade level.

Those who are interested should call their local SCC Center to pre-register and to sign up for a reading test. A PPD test must be administered within 3 months of the first day of clinicals.

Nurse Aide I Refresher Course: The Southwestern Community College N.A. I Refresher course will be offered to N.A. 1’s who were previously listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry within the past (3) there years without any allegations of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of a patient’s belongings and has let his/her listing expire for appropriate reasons as to be determined by the program coordinator. Verification of the previous listing with above stipulations must be obtained prior to admission into the Refresher course. The Refresher course candidate must provide a copy of his/her social security card and a photo I.D. The Refresher course will consist of forty (40) hours of instruction in the classroom and lab setting and six (6) hours of testing. State exam will be administered by Promissor, Inc., and will be an additional cost to the student. Students must attend all sessions. All other Southwestern Community College Competency Evaluations policies will be complied with for the N.A. I Refresher Program. Students must purchase the required text directly from the Bookstore prior to class.

ON-LINE CLASSES

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Continuing Education Division offers Basic to Advanced Online Coding Classes that are open to individuals interested in gaining insurance coding skills for an entry-level job, to the coder who desires educational enrichment through earning CEUs and to the coder who is preparing for the AAPC Coding Certification Exam.

The Series of eight On-line classes is designed to enhance the knowledge of the individual preparing to challenge the AAPC National Organization Certified Professional Coder's Exam.

Insurance Coders may work in hospitals, for insurance companies and at home or at client’s site as a consultant upon completion of the program, based on their previous experience in the medical field and employer’s requirements. Some people will enter the work force as an entry level Coder while others with prior experience as a seasoned Coder may fill many different jobs throughout the Physician office.

11-week course (39 hours) offered via the Internet (8/2/10-10/15/10).
The Registration fee for each course is $120, plus $5 Technology Fee, plus course materials.

Medical Terminology (Online) Serves as a foundation for all other medical training courses. Over 1000 words and terms are defined in 33 chapters outlined by body systems. Words are pronounced through your computer speaker. The course material download contains a comprehensive audio medical dictionary. (Course Materials: Download)

Medical Billing (Online) Prepares students for entry level jobs in accounting skills necessary in a doctor’s office or other medical facility. This thirty nine hour eleven week course includes Front Office Management, Filing Part B CMS 1500, Filing Part A CMS 1450, All About Medicare, Medicare Billing Problems, Patient Record Keeping using Medisoft, Medicare as Secondary Payer, Medicare & Home Health, Medicare and Women’s Health. Also included is a 1000 page 28 chapter Advanced Claims Processing Manual with everything you ever wanted to know about starting your own medical billing business from home. At the end of the regular course work, you are given an option to use Code it Right, an on line electronic version of the ICD9 and CPT coding manuals. This is not an instructor led course and has no bearing on your Medical Billing grade. (Course Materials: Download)

Advanced Coding ICD9 (Online) This course compiles and summarizes the official coding guidelines concerning the most common yet complex diagnosis coding issues. The course is organized by major body system chapters, as found in the ICD-9-CM manual. Each chapter is organized by (1) Issues (2) Coding Clarification (3) Physician Documentation Issues, and (4) Coding Scenarios. Advanced Coding-CPT (Online) This course is organized according to the sections in the CPT book. Frequently asked questions from real life situations are answered in an authoritative manner. This course provides advanced coding problems with their solutions. The main emphasis is on Evaluation and Management and Surgery codes. A five-step outline is used to help you code the exercises/scenarios in the problems. AAPC, AHIMA, and AMBA Certification Exam Review This online course is designed to prepare students to take the (1) Certified Professional Coder Examination (Hospital) administered by the American Academy of Professional Coder, (2) the Certified Coding Associate exam administered by the American Health Information Management Association and (3) the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist exam administered by the American Medical Billing Association. (Agencies may require different certifications). Topics for review include Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy, CPT Coding Guidelines, ICD-9-CM (Vol. 1 , 2 & 3) Diagnostic Coding, HCPCS Level 2, E//M Coding, Anesthesia Coding, Surgical Coding, and Use of Modifiers. Anatomy & Physiology for the Medical Office - Part One This eleven week thirty-nine hour self-paced course presents the structure of organisms by body systems and analyzes the normal function of body organs. Topics include cells & tissues, the integumentary system, the axial skeletal system, the appendicular skeletal system, the muscular system, the general nervous system, the central nervous system, and the peripheral nervous system. Anatomy & Physiology for the Medical Office- Part Two
This eleven week thirty-nine hour self-paced course continues the study of body systems. Topics include the five senses, the endocrine system, the blood, the heart and blood vessels, the lymphatic system, the respiratory system, the digestive system, metabolism, the urinary system, and the reproductive system. CEU APPROVAL / CERTIFICATE
Upon completion of each course, participants will receive a College certificate for the appropriate number of contact hours (CEUs). Application has been made for AAMA-approved CEUs. ($5.00 additional CEU fee payable to AAMA for non-members. If official documentation of completion is required, a Continuing Education Transcript can be requested from the Registrar. These classes do not count toward a degree and will not transfer into a degree program.
