Arts and Crafts

Bridal Bouquets: Save money and feel good about making your own bridal bouquet. Come letwedding consultant and florist, Helen Hughes, help you design your wedding flowers. The silk bouquet you make could be your bridal bouquet, bridesmaids, or your throw bouquet. Cascade and Hand Tied Bouquets can be made during class using your choice of flowers, colors, and size. Supply list will be mailed upon pre-registration.

Fresh Floral Basket: Learn the basics of making your own fresh floral basket. From the basics, you can always expand your imagination with different colors and flowers to make a basket for every occasion, using flowers you get from your yard or the grocery. You will learn how to prep flowers and secure wet foam in basket, blend colors and balance of arrangement. You will also learn how to make a professional bow for any occasion. Supply fee is an additional $25.

Hand-Painted Welcome Sign: Hand-Paint a “Welcome” sign on an 8”x10” slate. This is a man-made gray slate with a leather tie you will be painting with flowers, leaves, vines and old fashioned letters with easy to use combination of stencils and hand-painting. You will be personalizing it with a family name. This is a project for anyone – artist or not – fun and creative! Materials will be available for purchase in class for $5. Please include family name upon registration so it will be ready for you when you start class.

Silk Fall Centerpiece: The first class in this series will be a silk fall arrangement, followed by Thanksgiving, Christmas, and winter arrangements. Please look for these classes in the upcoming Fall and Winter Schedules. You will learn the basics so you can make many more at home as a unique gift. Save the arrangement and reuse or change each year. Supply list will be mailed upon registration.

Dance

Beginning Swing Dance: Taught by Heidi Turlington from the MADHoppers, an award winning swing dance team from Raleigh, this class is an introduction to the East Coast Swing. Swing dancing is a fun way to get in shape and meet new people! We will learn the basic six-count pattern, and begin working on triple-time. Come with or without a partner. Intermediate Shag: Shag is a central part of the Carolina lifestyle and a great way to keep in shape while having fun. People of all ages do the shag. This course is a continuation of the basic steps of shag to some vintage beach music. This program promises to be a lot of fun for anyone who likes to dance or wants to learn! Brunch for a Bunch: Is company coming? This class will involve “hands-on” preparation of two delicious brunch casseroles and accompaniments. You will get to set up and taste an entire meal. Bring your apron! Class is limited to 8. Supply fee is an additional $7.

Callings: Finding & Following an Authentic Life: This deeply personal, but lively and interesting class appeals to “seekers” of all ages. Through the use of journaling, discussion, reading, and optional experiential homework exercises, you can learn how to lead a more authentic life. Based on the book Callings by Gregg Levoy, this book-study class requires signup by June 17 to receive book ($15) and do the first week’s reading assignment.

Cooking with Herbs: At this make-and take-workshop participants will create an herb blend that can be used for cream cheese and butter spreads, salad dressings, and sauces. Students will learn how to make culinary delights using herbs in everyday cooking. Group will also prepare tasty creations from tea blends to herb butter spreads. Best of all there will be samples to taste and take home. Supply fee is an additional $18.

Eating Your Antioxidants: You have heard you need to consume antioxidants for optimal nutrition. But what are they? Where do you get them? Come to find the answers to these and other questions…and to learn how you can improve your meal planning for a healthier you. The class members will also prepare displays and taste antioxidant food sources. Supply fee is an additional $5.

Into the Forest for Landscape Photographs: Come join this class for a fun and adventurous one-day photo shoot in the great outdoors with award winning photographer, Jim Clayton. Students will meet at the Jackson Campus and leave as a group to a designated area to photograph nature at its best. Pack a lunch and wear your hiking boots. This will be a chance to meet other photographers and have a day of productive fun.

Light Cuisine: In this class you will prepare a “light” meal including two entrees, Crab Cakes and Crunchy Chicken Fingers, Roasted Vegetables with Tangy Butter Sauce, Mixed Greens Salad, and Trifle. Bring your apron and your appetite! Class limited to 8. Supply fee is an additional $10.

Making Great Videos: This in-depth class will teach you how to use a camera, get great audio, light your subjects, and produce and interview. The class will consist of four 90-minute sessions where you will learn to use the equipment. The last meeting will be a 6-hour shoot on August 2, 9-3P (bring lunch, water, and sunscreen), where you and your classmates will design, produce, and shoot a video project. Ralph Preston is a professional videographer with more than 30 years of experience producing, shooting, and editing broadcast-quality video programs.

Photography I: A class designed for the photo enthusiast. Emphasis will be placed on the basic principles of photography and the mechanics of the camera. Share insights and photos with other students while gaining a new perspective in visual arts.

Simple Baking & Decorating Techniques: This course will include a series of three lessons in Cake Decorating. The first class, on June 14, will cover the proper way to bake and prepare a cake for decoration with buttercream, fondant, and royal icing. The second class, on July 12, will cover a wide range of decorating techniques from simple star fill-in and drop flowers to lattice work, sotas, basketweave, and string work. The third and final class, on August 9, will focus on fondant molding, marbleizing, cut-outs, inlays, and blossoms. Materials list will be mailed upon registration.

Aviation Ground School for Pilots:
(60 hrs.) This course is a study of aerospace history, weather, navigation, instruments, preflight planning, computer and wind triangles, regulations, radio communications, the aviation field and procedures necessary to become a safe private pilot. Classes are oriented toward the latest material available from the Federal Aviation Agency and students are prepared to pass the written examination required by the FAA for your private pilot license.

Language CEUs available for all language classes

American Sign Language: This will be a time of fun and a introduction to a new language. Students will be introduced to basic American Sign Language through: introductions, family relations, basic counting, colors, weekdays, using opposites, communication with deaf people, basic deaf culture and more! It is primarily survival level skills. Lessons will be taught using pictures, flash cards, communication with classmates and written drills. No book is required. Class is designed for ages 7 to 14. Self-Supporting.

Basic American Sign Language: This course will be primarily survival level skills. Basic vocabulary related to everyday work or social situations, family relations, basic objects, colors, basic deaf culture, and the importance of facial expressions and body language as an integral part of the language. Beginning Conversational Spanish: This course will introduce the student to the basics of Spanish, focusing on everyday occurrences common to the tourist or for communication with Spanish speakers in our country. Conversational Workplace Spanish: This course is designed for those individuals who need to better communicate using the Spanish language in the workplace. You will learn common words and phrases, how to form sentences and questions, and tips to listening for answers. This course focuses on workplace situations and conversational use of the Spanish language. Some basic Spanish knowledge is helpful. This class is offered through the Small Business Center

Intermediate American Sign Language: This course includes continued development of expressive and receptive skills while minimal simple conversational signing skills are emphasized through interactive exercises. New vocabulary is developed using questions, statements, negative responses, basic ASL structure and basic concepts. This course will include more deaf culture, and the importance of facial expressions and body language as an integral part of the language. The vocabulary developed will relate to everyday work or social situations, family/friends relations, basic objects, descriptions, names of weekdays, money, time, and more! Intermediate Spanish Level I: This course is a continuation of Beginner Spanish – Level 3. The following will be among the subjects that will be studied: reflexive verbs; numbers from 20 to 2,000,000; the verb “gustar”; the preterit of regular, irregular and stem-changing verbs; demonstrative pronouns. Speaking and reading practice is also incorporated into this course with particular emphasis on the preterit or past tense. A prerequisite is that the student complete Beginner Spanish – Level 1-3 or have equivalent experience in Spanish. Book cost is extra.

Instructor Spotlight
HELEN HUGHES

Helen Hughes, instructor of Bridal Bouquets and Fresh Floral BasketNorth Carolina born Helen Hughes moved back from Central Florida three yearss ago and now lives in Bryson City. Over the years Helen has owned two hair salons and managed a fresh florist as well as assistant manager of a chain craft store. Helen has also been the owner of a wedding consultation/ planning business and participated in nine bridal shows in Florida and one in Asheville. Helen says weddings and events are so much fun to organize and decorate, and leave her with such a feeling of accomplisment when it’s all over and the family is happy.Since becoming full time here in the mountains, Helen has been involved in weddings for friends and has started teaching some floral classes through the Continuing Education department at Southwestern Community College. These floral classes are not just for weddings. There is a series of holiday arrangements, some fresh and some silk, coming in the summer and fall continuing education schedule that will fit well in our mountain homes. These classes are lots of fun and you get to meet new people.
