Fresh Floral Basket:
Learn the basics of making your
own fresh floral basket. From
the basics, you can always expand
your imagination with different
colors and flowers to make a basket
for every occasion, using flowers
you get from your yard or the
grocery. You will learn how to
prep flowers and secure wet foam
in basket, blend colors and balance
of arrangement. You will also
learn how to make a professional
bow for any occasion. Supply fee

Hand-Painted Welcome
Sign: Hand-Paint a “Welcome”
sign on an 8”x10”
slate. This is a man-made gray
slate with a leather tie you will
be painting with flowers, leaves,
vines and old fashioned letters
with easy to use combination of
stencils and hand-painting. You
will be personalizing it with
a family name. This is a project
for anyone – artist or not
– fun and creative! Materials
will be available for purchase

The first class in this series
will be a silk fall arrangement,

Beginning Swing Dance:
Taught by Heidi Turlington
from the MADHoppers, an award
winning swing dance team from
Raleigh, this class is an introduction
to the East Coast Swing. Swing
dancing is a fun way to get in
shape and meet new people! We
will learn the basic six-count
pattern, and begin working on
triple-time. Come with or without

Intermediate Shag:
Shag is a central part of the
Carolina lifestyle and a great
way to keep in shape while having
fun. People of all ages do the

Callings: Finding &
Following an Authentic Life:
This deeply personal, but lively
and interesting class appeals
to “seekers” of all
ages. Through the use of journaling,
discussion, reading, and optional
experiential homework exercises,

Callings by Gregg Levoy, this
book-study class requires signup
by June 17 to receive book ($15)

Cooking with Herbs:
At this make-and take-workshop
participants will create an herb
blend that can be used for cream
cheese and butter spreads, salad
dressings, and sauces. Students
will learn how to make culinary
delights using herbs in everyday

to herb butter spreads. Best of
all there will be samples to taste

Into the Forest for Landscape
Photographs: Come join
this class for a fun and adventurous
one-day photo shoot in the great

Making Great Videos:
This in-depth class will teach
you how to use a camera, get great
audio, light your subjects, and
produce and interview. The class
will consist of four 90-minute
sessions where you will learn
to use the equipment. The last
meeting will be a 6-hour shoot
on August 2, 9-3P (bring lunch,
water, and sunscreen), where you
and your classmates will design,
produce, and shoot a video project.

Simple Baking & Decorating
Techniques: This course
will include a series of three
lessons in Cake Decorating. The
first class, on June 14, will
cover the proper way to bake and
prepare a cake for decoration
with buttercream, fondant, and
royal icing. The second class,
on July 12, will cover a wide
range of decorating techniques
from simple star fill-in and drop
flowers to lattice work, sotas,
basketweave, and string work.
The third and final class, on
August 9, will focus on fondant
molding, marbleizing, cut-outs,
inlays, and blossoms. Materials

Students will be introduced to
basic American Sign Language through:

HELEN HUGHES
North
Carolina born Helen Hughes
moved back from Central
Florida three yearss ago
and now lives in Bryson
City. Over the years Helen
has owned two hair salons
and managed a fresh florist
as well as assistant manager
of a chain craft store.
Helen has also been the
owner of a wedding consultation/
planning business and participated
in nine bridal shows in
Florida and one in Asheville.
Helen says weddings and
events are so much fun to
organize and decorate, and
leave her with such a feeling
of accomplisment when it’s
all over and the family
is happy.Since becoming
full time here in the mountains,
Helen has been involved
in weddings for friends
and has started teaching
some floral classes through
the Continuing Education
department at Southwestern
Community College. These
floral classes are not just
for weddings. There is a
series of holiday arrangements,
some fresh and some silk,
coming in the summer and
fall continuing education
schedule that will fit well
in our mountain homes. These
classes are lots of fun
and you get to meet new
people.
