READY TO ‘Start College Early’ ? Here’s How:
• Submit the Application for High School students (you can download below) to the SCC Admissions Office
Parent permission is required for students under 18.
• Take the ACCUPLACER College Placement Test, if required for your SCC class(es)
The “ACCUPLACER” College Placement Test (CPT) consists of 5 different sections: reading comprehension, sentence skills, arithmetic, elementary algebra and basic computer skills. Current high school students are exempt from the basic computer skills test.
The ACCUPLACER(CPT) Test is required for students taking College/University Transfer courses like math, physics and biology. Not all SCC classes require ACCUPLACER test scores. Please consult the
Academics for testing or other prerequisites.
The ACCUPLACER is given free of charge. Testing sessions are regularly scheduled at the SCC-Sylva and SCC-Macon campuses. The Accuplacer may also be given at your high school. Contact SCC Testing Coordinator or your high school guidance office for more information.
Note: Official SAT, ACT, ASSET or COMPASS scores may be used in lieu of the ACCUPLACER. Please consult the SCC College Placement Test Scores Chart (you can download this below).
• Register for classes at your high school and SCC
A Concurrent Enrollment Registration and Permission Form is required for each semester. Complete a form after consulting with your high school guidance counselor and/or College Access Liaison. Student, high school principal, and guidance counselor signatures are required on this form. Click HERE to access the Concurrent Enrollment Registration and Permission Form for High School Students.
Please take special note of your course’s start date. SCC classes often start before the first day of classes at local high schools.
• Buy Textbooks and any other supplies you need for class
For many programs, textbooks and materials must be purchased by participating students. Textbooks should be purchased prior to the first day of classes. Please check with your guidance counselor or College Access Liaison to see if you need to purchase textbooks or if the books are covered by your program.
Visit the SCC Bookstore online at
http://www.cbamatthews.com/swcc/ to look up required items for each course. The SCC bookstore is located on the third floor of the Balsam Center at SCC-Sylva. Bookstore staff will send textbooks to the SCC campus/ center most convenient to you at no charge. Shipping is also available. Call 828.339.4222 or email Shane Burns at
sburns@southwesterncc.edu in the bookstore for more details.
Limited textbook assistance or “loaner books” may be available. Contact the Concurrent Enrollment office for more details at 828.339.4610 or
Cindy_Thompson@southwesterncc.edu.
• Log on to MySCC
All SCC students have MySCC accounts.
MySCC is how students access WebAdvisor (Webadvisor is where you will find your schedule, grades, un-official transcript, financial aid award letter and other related information.), Gmail (SCC student email), Google calendar and Blackboard (Bb is where you will access your on-line and web enhanced classes.).
All official college information is sent to you through MySCC Gmail account. To activate this account, you must log in by visiting
www.southwesterncc.edu and clicking on the ‘MySCC’ link.
Your User Name is the first letter of your first name, first 4 letters of your last name and the last 4 numbers of your SCC student ID number. Your Password is your birthdate as 6 numbers (MMDDYY). Your SCC student email address is your “User Name”@student.southwesterncc.edu
• Complete a BlackBoard (Bb) Training Session (online classes only)
Please Note - Online classes will not be active (visible in your Bb account) until THE FIRST DAY OF CLASSES each semester.
When you login to BlackBoard the FIRST DAY OF CLASS each semester (Bb classes will not be “active” until the first day of classes), you will see a course entitled BLACKBOARD TRAINING on the right hand side of your screen. You will not receive a grade for this course; it is for training purposes only. This course will be removed at the end of the second week of the semester. If you feel that you need additional help, you may attend a hands-on training session on campus (see schedule below), or you may contact our E-Learning Department.
