Wildland Firefighting Academy

This course will present a series of four classes needed to function as a wildland firefighter. 

The classes are the National Wildland Fire Suppression classes: 
S-130  Basic Wildland Firefighter 
S-190  Introduction to Fire Behavior 
L-180   Human Factors on the Fireline 
I-100  Introduction to Incident Command System. 

These courses provide instruction in the primary environmental factors that affect the start and spread of wildfires and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. Also, human factors on the fireline and basic incident command structure will be discussed.

Cost:

$135.00 for tuition and materials. Book fee $15 (Fee exemptions will apply for some North Carolina fire personnel)

Registration:

Pre-Registration can be completed online. To pre-register for the Wildland Firefighting Academy call 828.306.7041. Payment must accompany registration. Acceptable payment methods include check, made payable to Southwestern Community College, credit card, money order or certified bank check.

Class Size:

Classes are limited to 24 people. Please register early.

Class confirmation will be emailed five days prior to the start of class. If you have not received confirmation please call 800.447.4091 and ask for Public Safety Training Complex or 828.306.7041.

Note: To perform as an entry-level wildland firefighter, you will need to pass a physical fitness test offered by your employer. A typical test is a three-mile hike, carrying a 45-lb. pack. This test must be completed in less than 45 minutes.
