Types of Distance Learning Courses

  1. Web-Centered - College credit or continuing education course where 100% of the instruction is delivered through the Internet.
  2. Web-Enhanced - College credit or continuing education course where the primary delivery is via traditional face-to-face method with a requirement that students have Internet access as a supplemental part of the course.
  3. Hybrid - College credit or continuing education course where the primary delivery is on-line with a requirement that students also meet in traditional face-to-face sessions as determined appropriate by the college.
  4. ITV - College credit or continuing education course where 100% of the instruction is delivered by two- or more way video.

Technical Requirements
*Note - if you cannot meet the technical requirements listed, there are many computer labs available to you on campus.

System Requirements
  • Windows 98, 2000, NT, ME, or XP
  • Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X
  • Minimum 64 MB RAM, 1 G of free disk space
  • 150 MHz or higher processing speed
  • 56K modem or better
Supported Web Browsers
  • Internet Explorer 6 for Windows
  • Internet Explorer 5 for Macintosh
  • Netscape 7 for Windows and Macintosh
The AOL web browser will not work for Blackboard. After connecting to AOL you must use a separate, supported web browser such as IE or Netscape to access Blackboard. Browser Configuration
Cookies must be enabled for Blackboard to function correctly. Some people do not permit cookies on their computer, but Blackboard needs to set what's called a "Session" cookie in order to work. You will not be able to log onto the system until you permit Blackboard to set that cookie.
To permit cookies in Internet Explorer
  1. Go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
  2. Click on the Privacy Tab. The privacy must be set to "Medium" or lower in order for Blackboard to work. Click on Ok to save the changes.
  3. Quit Internet Explorer.
To permit cookies in Netscape 7
  1. Click on the Edit menu and select Preferences.
  2. Click on the arrow next to Privacy and select Cookies.
  3. Click on Enable All Cookies.
  4. Click on OK to save changes.
Reload Cache Every Time You Visit a Page Internet Explorer 6
  1. Select Tools, then Internet Options.
  2. Select the General tab.
  3. Select Settings from Temporary Internet Files.
  4. Select the Every Visit to the Page radio button.
  5. Click OK and Ok again to save the changes.
Netscape 7
  1. Select Edit, then Preferences.
  2. Click the arrow next to Advanced to see more options.
  3. Select Cache.
  4. Select the Every time I view the page radio button.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

Computer Skills

  1. You are able to use a word-processor and save files as "Rich Text Format" (.rtf) or Word Documents (.doc).
  2. You are able to copy and paste from one document to another.
  3. You are able to write and send e-mail and attach files.
  4. You are able to download and install software.
