Welcome!

Here you will find questions and answers to the most frequently-asked E-Learning questions from instructors.

Q: My Summer 2015/Fall 2015 Course has a "Smarthinking" menu link and an "Online Tutoring" link. What do I do?

A: The way students and instructors access Smarthinking has changed. In the past, there was a link in all Blackboard courses labeled "Smarthinking." Beginning in the summer of 2015, the link has been updated, and the new link is called "Online Tutoring." The Smarthinking link will no longer function. When course materials are copied from a term prior to 2015SU, the "Smarthinking" link will come as well. You will need to remove the link labeled "Smarthinking." See the Online Tutoring Menu Link tutorial.

Q: How do I add a TA to my course? / How do I add an instructor to my course? / How do I add a student to my course? / How do I request a course merge? / How do I request a course copy that I can’t do myself?

A. Please see our Online Forms for Faculty Requests page containing links to Google forms for each of these types of requests. Once you have filled out and submitted the online form (which will require you to log in to MySCC so that we may collect your SCC user name), you will be contacted by E-Learning to get more information or to let you know that your request has been fulfilled.

Q: Some of my columns are invisible in Grade Center, or I can see the incorrect columns. How do I fix this?

A: Sometimes you may have an assignment that students have completed, but the scores are not visible to you in grade center. This may be because the column is hidden. Please see this tutorial for assistance.

Q: I can't see columns I have created in Blackboard's Grade Center.

A: This may be due to an issue with your scroll bar. Please see the Fixing the Scroll Bar in Grade Center tutorial.

Q: I can't see all of my students listed in my Grade Center.

A. This may be due to an issue with your scroll bar. Please see the Fixing the Scroll Bar in Grade Center tutorial.

Q: Why am I unable to do Inline Grading for some of my students’ submitted assignments?

A: It may be that your students are submitting in a file format that is incompatible with the Blackboard Inline Grading feature. Compatible file formats are Word (.doc, .docx), PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx), Excel (.xls, .xlsx), and PDF (.pdf). Anything that students type directly into the comment box or assignment text box will NOT be converted to a file format that will allow the instructor to provide Inline Grading. See Inline Grading for Assignments (website) and Grading Assignments (website) for more information.

Q: My students say they can't see my comments on their assignments in Blackboard / My students want to download the assignment with my comments on it.

A: Please direct them to this student tutorial: Downloading an Assignment with Comments (also available on the Student Blackboard page).

Q: My students say they receive an error ("Resource Unavailable") when they try to access a Discussion Board forum. The forum is set to "available." What is happening?

A: If a course was copied from a previous semester, a discussion board may have a date limit set on it from the previous term. Please see this tutorial to fix it.

A: Please see the Generating Course Reports tutorial.

Q: How do I copy a Quiz/Test from one of my courses to another?

A: Please see this tutorial.

Q: How and when are courses created in Blackboard?

A. Courses are created when the class schedule is made available. Summer and Fall courses are created on the same day. The information is pulled from Datatel Colleague into Blackboard by E-Learning and/or IT. This information is generally updated weekly in the month before a new semester begins, as some instructors are added to courses after the course schedule is created. If you are unable to view a course that you are assigned to teach, please contact E-Learning at 828.339.4398 or 828.339.4399 or submit a Help Ticket to SCC E-Learning.

Q: Who is responsible for course copies?

A: Instructors are responsible for copying courses. (Please see this tutorial for help.) If you are planning to copy a course into your new semester's course shell, you must be the instructor on the original course. If you are not the instructor in the original course, please use this Google form (also found on the Online Forms for Faculty Requests page of our website).

Q: What is the expectation for instructors regarding course availability?

A: All courses for an upcoming term are made unavailable by E-Learning. Instructors are required to make courses available at 8 am on the first day of the term. Please see the tutorial for course availability here.

Q: When will students show up in my course?

A: Students are not added to your course until the day before, in most cases. Again, you should make your courses available to them no sooner than 8 am of the first day of the term.

Q: What is the Course Archive process?

A: We keep one course from each term (spring, summer, and fall) on the Blackboard server to manage the storage we use. For instance, when Summer 2015 courses are created, we keep courses from Summer 2014 on the server for reference. When the Summer 2015 term is complete, we will archive the Summer 2014 courses. When courses are archived, they are downloaded from the server and saved onto hard drives. In some cases, courses are saved as templates and remain on the server with titles like "ACA-111-Template" so that they will not be archived and can be used as templates for future courses.

Q: I taught a course a few years ago and will be teaching it again. How can I find the old version of my course to access or copy it?

A: Please contact E-Learning at 828.339.4398 or 828.339.4399 or submit a Help Ticket to SCC E-Learning.

Q: A student must be dropped from, withdrawn from, or added to my course. What is the correct process?

A: Start by contacting the registrar. Once the student is removed or added to the course in Datatel Colleague (which is dependent on the SCC Registrar, not E-Learning), Blackboard will be updated usually within 12 hours. If the course does not update, please first contact the Registrar to be sure that the request has been processed. If it has been processed by the registrar, please contact E-Learning at 828.339.4398 or 828.339.4399 or submit a Help Ticket to SCC E-Learning.

Q: How soon can I expect changes made in Datatel Colleague to be reflected in my courses in Blackboard?

A: The system that updates Blackboard from Datatel Colleague runs automatically at 7 am, 1 pm, and 5 pm on week days. It generally takes between an hour and an hour and a half to run. If an update hasn't shown up within 12 hours, please contact E-Learning at 828.339.4398 or 828.339.4399 or submit a Help Ticket to SCC E-Learning. Faculty are not permitted to enable or disable students in their Blackboard courses.

Q: I have merged two courses into a Parent and Child course combination. I would like to see the Course ID of each student in the Grade Center. How do I do this?

A: Click here for the Showing Course ID in Grade Center tutorial.

Q: Where can I find some Best Practices for teaching with Blackboard?

A: Check out these videos created by Blackboard for some suggestions for Best Practices.
