Present:
Mitch Fischer, Barbara Connell,
Elizabeth Haynes, Ron Poor, Connie
Gregory, Randy McCall, Wanda Morris,
Mary Bradley
President Mitch Fischer called
the meeting of the faculty senate
to order at 2:07 pm. President
Fischer opened the meeting by
asking those present what amount
knowledge they had about the Jackson
County Early College (JCEC). There
was a brief discussion of the
mission of the early college,
how and when it came about and
the perception of the early college.
It was a consensus that President
Fischer should ask for more dialogue
between JCEC and SCC faculty.
Workload Revisions for
Curriculum Faculty
There was a brief discussion of
the revision of the workload policy
to reflect the change to the four-day
workweek. This is based on the
Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday
scheduling format.
Enrollment Data
FTE for fall 2008 is 2,323, up
69 from the previous year.
Budget Cuts
The state has already rescinded
2% from the budget and has requested
another 2% be held in reserve.
The college is in a wait and see
mode relative to the rest of the
funds. Monies based on performance
measures were unclear. There was
a brief discussion about the budget
that followed.
Community College Survey
of Student Engagement (CCSSE)
SCC has exceeded the 2008 benchmarks
in almost all areas. Particularly
impressive were areas where students
interacted with faculty. There
was a brief discussion that followed
about faculty and student interaction.
Registration Changes
There was a discussion about registration
changes during early registration,
registration day and during the
drop/add period. During the early
registration period, it is not
necessary to have a hard copy
of student registration forms.
After the first day of class however,
it is necessary to have a paper
copy and follow the necessary
channels to the registrar’s
office. There was also a discussion
about some minor changes in course
classifications that was related
in an e-mail sent to faculty by
Dean Putman.
Student Recognition
There has been a proposal to have
faculty vote for “Student
of the Year” within each
of the three divisions, to be
selected by a committee of faculty
in that area. The selection would
be based on an application process
and a recommendation from the
student’s instructor(s).
The student would receive a plaque
at graduation. During the discussion
among those present it was noted
that there are several honor societies
(PTK, NTHS) that already recognize
student achievement and that distinguishing
one student would become a popularity
contest and be more divisive than
anything else. There was a unanimous
vote in opposition to this proposal.
Academic Rank
There was a discussion of pursuing
the possibility of creating a
system of academic rank if the
majority of faculty is interested.
A subcommittee will explore and
create a simple, concise proposal.
The subcommittee will consist
of Ron Poor, Mitch Fischer, Wilda
Walker and another faculty member
from Arts and Sciences. Mary Bradley
will relate to President Fischer
which faculty member is interested
in serving on this committee.
Faculty/Staff Web Site
There was a discussion of having
a Faculty/ Staff web site that
could be used to post meetings,
announcements etc. specifically
for faculty and staff at SCC.
Dr. Elizabeth Haynes agreed to
lead that project and any ideas
or suggestions may be sent to
her.
Being no other items for discussion,
a motion and second was heard
to adjourn. The meeting was adjourned
at 3:20 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Randy McCall
Faculty Senate Secretary
