the Fund for the Improvement of Teaching
and Learning

The purpose
of the Fund for the Improvement of Teaching
and Learning is to provide mini-grants to
college faculty and staff (full/part time)
to participate in professional development
opportunities, help students engage in learning
experiences beyond the classroom, and explore
innovative ways to improve the teaching
and learning process.

GUIDELINES
|
Professional Development Activities Can Include: |
| • |
A focus on expanding
teaching roles, learning innovative teaching
methodologies, return-to-industry experiences,
improving job skills that relate to student
content, and enhancing leadership and college
administration abilities; |
| • |
Attending special schools
or conferences which provide credit, certification,
or training; |
| • |
Participating in workshops
and studies leading to accreditation, special
certifications and SACS requirements; and |
| • |
Helping students attend conferences
related to their discipline area or leadership
development. |
Innovation
Projects Can Include: |
| • |
Imaginative educational proposals,
instructor designed activities, new ways to
serve students, new learning environments,
and support for students; |
| • |
New ideas to meet student/college
needs, cooperative faculty projects, applications
of technology,
interdisciplinary developments, and learning
activities; |
| • |
Experimental designs, collaborative
team efforts, faculty-directed classroom research,
inter-departmental projects, and learning
communities. |
Allowable
Expenses: |
| • |
For professional development
projects, allowable expenses include substitutes,
registration fees, travel, lodging, per diem,
tuition, books, and fees. |
| • |
For innovation projects,
allowable costs include consultants, special
contracts, equipment, release time, substitutes,
supplies & materials, temporary support
staff, travel, lodging and per diem. |
Application
Process: |
| • |
Applicants may submit more
than one kind of proposal during each mini-grant
cycle. Priority may be given to applicants
who have not recently received funding. |
| • |
Applicants are encouraged
to identify matching funds from other sources. |
| • |
Applications will be solicited
once a year, depending upon available funding
(form available on SCC website). |
| • |
Applications will be reviewed
by the Professional Development Committee
and the SCC Foundation Board of Directors. |
| • |
Mini-grant recipients will
be asked to submit a brief report at the end
of their project. |
