New Century Scholars
Since 1995, the New Century Scholars
program has provided selected public
school students with two-year scholarships
to SCC, along with support and enrichment
activities. The first group of New
Century Scholars arrived on SCC's
campus as college students in fall,
2001. Scholarship support for these
Jackson, Swain and Macon students
is provided by generous individuals,
businesses and community groups.
Presently, more than 650 students
participate in this program.
Questions Frequently Asked About
New Century Scholars
What is the NCS program?
The New Century Scholars program
is a joint effort among Southwestern
Community College, the school systems
of Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties
to provide incentives in the form
of scholarships and extra support
to selected rising seventh grade
students. Each school system is
responsible for the numbers of scholarships
awarded and program management.
The Southwestern Community College
Foundation manages the funds, and
the college provides a program for
the participants that includes campus
visits and other activities designed
to help the student become familiar
with the college and career opportunities.
The scholarships are two-year, full-tuition
awards to SCC and are not transferable
to any other institution.
How will the NCS program be
funded and continued each year?
Each $500 contribution provides
one student a two year scholarship
to attend Southwestern after high
school graduation. Any individual,
business, agency, club, or group
may provide a scholarship by making
a tax deductible contribution. These
funds will be invested and managed
by the SCC Foundation. Monies will
be dispensed in the form of a scholarship
to the student upon enrollment at
the college. Continuance of the
program and the number of scholarships
awarded depends on annual fund-raising.
How Can I Help?
The success of the NCS program depends
on you. With each $500 contribution,
a scholarship can be awarded. Your
gift will allow a student life-long
possibilities through a two-year
scholarship and an education that
will have far reaching implications.
Donors may elect to participate
in a mentor program if they want
to be actively involved with the
students. Pledges for the year are
deposited on August 1 for award
at the beginning of September.
- The SCC Foundation manages all
funds and furnishes the school
systems regular reports about
the status of fund-raising as
well as a monthly account of funds.
- Pledges may be paid all at once
or in a maximum of three installments.
- The SCC Foundation will invoice
donors if a request is made.

"Without
the New Century Scholars program,
a lot of us might not have the
opportunity to go to college.
I can't begin to say how grateful
I am to the people who made
a college education possible
for us."
- Josh Ward,
Jackson County student |

"People
that do good in school should
be recognized for it and be
able to go to college. The program
has gotten me into doing volunteer
work and doing Relay for Life.
It has made me become friends
with people who I would have
never talked to."
-Heather Southards,
Swain County student
