Who can be a part of GEAR UP?
GEAR UP serves specific middle and high schools in Macon, Swain, Jackson counties and the Qualla Boundary.
GEAR UP serves entire grades at a participating school. Currently (2011) grades 7-12 at participating schools may receive services, however, because our grant is only offering extension services through December our services are focused in the high schools.

Can I participate in GEAR UP if I am in NCS or UB?
Yes, you can...and we encourage you to do so.
Is there a cost for GU services?
No. Most services and activities are free. Occasionally, there may be a fee to help pay for materials or supplies, or to help pay for a “self-supporting" class. These special circumstances will be noted in any sign-up materials for these special classes.
What services are offered to students?
Our primary goal this fall is to provide college going information to increase the numbers of students who are able to attend college after high school. This includes information on making career choices, financial aid and scholarships, submitting college applications, taking college entrance exams and on taking rigorous courses during high school to improve students' abilities to succeed in college.
What services does GEAR UP offer to help parents?
GEAR UP offers a variety of workshops and events. Specifically we offer information on college awareness, financial planning for college, computer skills, and how to help their kids with homework.
What services does GEAR UP offer to help teachers?
Teachers and schools are our partners and we are able to support them through organizing and offering opportunities for staff development and matching funds for equipment and supplies. We work with students as tutors and bring enrichment opportunities that support curriculum objectives and goals. We assist teachers with special projects and events that help promote academic growth and awareness of college and career opportunities.
What about community partners?
The community is a great support and asset to the GEAR UP Program. There are rewards and services that help encourage our students to becoming a part of the community. To name a few, interacting in job shadowing, encouragement with incentives for good grades at the Fun Factory, and donations to help fund Macon Middle School’s summer program. These partners are helping us achieve our goals in promoting a higher education. Anyone can help at making this difference.
