Ceramics course in handbuilding - SCC's Heritage Arts Institute will offer a new ceramics course in handbuilding this summer. In addition to the basics of handbuilding which includes pinch pots, coils, slabs, and extrusions, students will learn to build on these techniques in the creation of sculptures. » more info

A variety of photography courses designed to fit the needs of the amateur and professional alike is being offered through SCC's Heritage Arts Institute this summer. » details

Elise DelfieldMajolica ceramics course starts July 30 - The Heritage Arts Institute of Southwestern Community College offers a Majolica ceramics course this summer in their master potters' certificate program. This 36-hour course starts meets Mondays and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning July 30. The registration fee is $60 and students purchase their clay from the college. » details


The roster of contributing artists continues to grow for the 9th annual Mountain Shapes and Colors Art Sale to be held on Saturday, July 7, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Southwestern Community College’s Swain Center. Original works by artisans of North Carolina's Smoky Mountains region will be for sale and include works by students of the Heritage Arts Institute at SCC, along with silver and gemstone jewelry, handmade pottery, handmade baskets, batik silk scarves, wood turnings, nature photography and more. » details

David HubbsHeritage Arts Institute Expands program - The center just received a $23,000 grant from the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area to expand the Institute’s pottery offerings into such areas as high fire gas, salt and raku firing. This expansion will be made possible through the construction of a 864-square-foot kiln shed that will house three kilns, a glaze mixing area and a washing area. It will be built adjacent to the two existing pottery studios which include 21 pottery wheels, two low-fire electric kilns and hand-building space and equipment. » full story   (Feb '07)

Potter show and salePottery show and sale to be held Dec 8, 2006 - Students and faculty of the Southwestern Community College Heritage Arts pottery program will participate in a show and sale of their work Saturday, Dec. 8, at SCC. The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Balsam Center. » details

Pottery shown at Smoky Mountain Crafts WorkArts program to hold workshop - The Heritage Arts Institute of Southwestern Community College and the Consumer Sciences Division of the NC Cooperative Extension have joined forces to offer five workshops on Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2, at the SCC Swain Center. Called Smoky Mountain Crafts Work, it is designed to provide participants with a variety of craft arts sessions coupled with lunch and learn opportunities on marketing craft arts. The sessions will cost $90, which includes registration fees, materials, and lunch for both days. Participants can select from one of five two-day workshops to attend in basket weaving, clay, fiber arts, metal working or paper making. » details   (Nov '06)

SCC at Macon County Fair - Six-year-old Emily Madison McCrackin, daughter of Adam and Christy McCrackin of Clayton, GA, tries her hand at throwing on the potter’s Hank demonstrates potter's wheel at Macon County Fairwheel with the help of Hank Shuler, Southwestern Community College director of Extension: Business and Industry, at SCC’s booth at the Macon County Fair. Shuler worked throughout the fair to give young people the opportunity to try pottery making which is part of SCC’s Heritage Arts Program curriculum. » full story  (Sept '06)

Art Enrichment for Youth - Kids from Jackson, Macon and Swain counties in age groups 9 through 11 and 12 through 14 can explore new and old craft traditions this summer (2006) in two week-long programs being offered by the Southwestern Community College's Heritage Arts Enrichment Program for Youth. » details   (June '06)

Basketmaking - Debra MillsSCC Heritage Arts Institute to offer basket making - Beginning in March, local basket maker Debra Mills will serve as instructor in the first basket weaving class to be offered through Southwestern Community College's new Heritage Arts Institute. The class will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 20 through April 21. The course is designed for the beginner and intermediate weaver. Participants will complete several projects designed to provide them with a variety of skills in traditional and contemporary basket making. » details  (Mar '06)
