Frequently
Asked Questions
Is
the LAC an open lab?
Yes and no . . . the LAC is a professionally
staffed lab, so our main mission is
to provide academic assistance and technical
support as students write papers, solve
math problems, conduct research, learn
software applications, and study for
exams. However, students also may drop
in to check email between classes.
Who can get help in the LAC?
Any enrolled SCC student. Our lab is for
all students of all majors at all points
in their academic careers. Faculty members
are also welcome to use the computer lab
and text/video/software/workshop resources.
Must students be referred
to the LAC by an instructor?
No, as a matter of fact, a self-referral
form is available at www.southwesterncc.edu/forms/lac/self-referral.htm.
Toni Knott, LAC Coordinator, will contact
you shortly after receiving your request.
Also, the LAC is open to students on a drop-in
basis, as well as by appointment. Call Toni
at ext. 325 to make an appointment.
Who is available to help students
in the LAC?
Any learning consultant can answer general
questions and help problem-solve basic
computer, homework and research problems.
Each consultant also specializes in
at least one subject, such as advanced
math. Students may check the schedules
posted outside the entrance for hours
when specialized help is available and
the board inside the door to see who
is on duty. Learning consultants usually
sit near the entrance and have colorful
signs to help identify them. A learning
consultant to help with writing is on
duty at all times during the LAC operating
hours. » Meet

How
does a student get a peer tutor?
Students interested in peer tutoring should
contact Marti Hunter in Student Support
Services at extension 420. Student Support
Services is located on the ground floor
of Oaks. Marti coordinates SCC's nationally
certified peer-tutoring program. Tutors
are available in most subjects at times
that are convenient for students.
Is online tutoring available?
Yes! SCC recently purchased Smarthinking.com’s
online tutoring service, which is available
to all students. Some help—such as
math—is available 24 hours a day.
Contact Toni (ext. 325) for more information.
What is the purpose of LAC workshops?
Learning consultants and other campus resource
personnel design and present workshops on
topics that support students' academic and
affective needs. Workshops are sponsored
by instructors and offered in classes, but
all students and instructors are welcome
to attend on a drop-in basis. Instructors
should give Toni a call (ext. 325) if interested
in presenting or scheduling a workshop.
