About Being an MLT - a Career for You!

Job Opportunities

Today, there are more jobs for laboratory personnel than educated people to fill those jobs.
The future long term employment looks bright - - well into the next century.
The national average salary median for medical laboratory technicians is approximately $24,960.

Characteristics of a MLT
problem solvers
responsible, accurate and reliable
emotionally stable and work well under pressure
communicate well, both in writing and speaking
they set high standards for themselves and expect quality in the work they do.

Career Preparation
Have a solid foundation in high school sciences -- biology, chemistry, math, and computer science.
Completion of a MLT program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
Successfully complete a national certification exam.

Opportunities for Advancement
MLT who earns a baccalaureate degree and has 3 years experience is eligible for certification as a Medical Technologist.
An MLT who attends a NAACLS accredited medical technologist program can also become certified as a Medical Technologist.
MLT's or MT's can become teachers, supervisors, sales people, or researchers.
