SYLVA - More than $16,000 has been awarded to Southwestern Community College, which serves Jackson, Macon and Swain counties in western North Carolina, to fight the "Crime of the New Millennium:" Cyber Crime.

The North Carolina Community College System announced earlier this month that it has provided $16,066 in grant funding to help support Southwestern's new and growing Cyber Crime Technology program. This amount is in addition to the $7,500 that the SCC Foundation set aside during its October meeting for the Cyber Crime program.

"This funding will afford us the opportunity to strengthen faculty resources and add several elements that will allow us to deliver it to a broader market," said Dr. Gene Couch, SCC's Vice-President for Instructional Services.

Providing tactics against cyber criminals, Southwestern Community College premiered the nation's first such program earlier this fall. The popular program, which is filled to capacity, teaches students to investigate computer crimes, properly seize-and-recover computer evidence and aid in the prosecution of cyber criminals.
