SYLVA -
Southwestern Community College's Art and Literature review, Milestone,
will be taking on a new look this year thanks to a $5,000 gift from
the Southwestern Community College Foundation. Milestone,
which showcases the creative expressions from western North Carolina
artists and writers through prose, poetry and artwork, will be expanding
from a 60-page publication printed on the campus of SCC to a 100-plus
page publication printed off-campus. Owen Gibby,
Allan Grant and Roger Stephens, instructors at Southwestern, will once
again act as faculty advisors. Toni Knott, a part-time instructor at
SCC, was recently hired as editor. Residents
of Macon, Swain and Jackson Counties and the Qualla Boundary may submit
art and manuscripts for the publication. An editorial committee of eight
or nine members from SCC's Art and English departments will select submissions
for the publication. First- and
second-place prizes are awarded in poetry, prose and art, and one award
is given for the best cover art. First-place winners will receive a
cash prize of $100 and second place winners will be awarded $50. Deadline
for submission to the Milestone is Dec. 1. Submissions should be mailed
to: The SCC Review, 447 College Drive, Sylva, NC 28779. For information
regarding literary submissions, contact Grant at 586-4091 or (800) 447-4091
ext. 322, or Gibby at ext. 314, or for questions regarding art submissions
contact Stephens at ext. 259.
