SCC's Penny Wiggins named "Student of the Month" by Sylva Rotary

SYLVA - For her accomplishments in Southwestern Community College's accounting program, Peggy Wiggins has been named "Student of the Month" by the Sylva Rotary Club.

In addition to a certificate inscribed in her honor, Wiggins also received a $100 savings bond and a meal with the Rotary Club.

"We want to honor students that are doing well in the various vocations as a way to promote the mission of Rotary," said Dr. Charles McConnell, who serves as president of the local Rotary Club. "This way, we're honoring both the vocations and the students."

In order to be considered for this honor, students must: be a full-time, currently enrolled, degree-seeking student; hold a Grade Point Average of 3.5 or higher; and demonstrate good citizenship and character. Other criteria that factor into the selection are: participation in extra-curricular, college-service activities; notable classroom, project or work-related achievements and participation in community service and other voluntary activities.

Funding for the "Student of the Month" award has been donated by Jim Greenwald, a Florida resident who lives in Jackson County several months each year. He gave $10,000 in memory of his late daughter and granddaughter, Tina Greenwald and Tiffany Greenwald.

The "Student of the Month" honor will be awarded every month out of the school year with honorees being selected alternately from SCC and Smoky Mountain High School.
