SYLVA
- In his
book "Life and the Student," Charles Horton Cooley
wrote: "An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one."
In that spirit, Southwestern Community College will begin offering a
new area of study in the field of Fine Arts beginning this fall. The
new program will award students an Associate in Fine Arts degree that
is designed to transfer to a senior institution, where students may
pursue either a Bachelor in Fine Arts or a Bachelor of Arts.
"This
program adds a new dimension to our program offerings at SCC,"
said Gene Couch, Ed.D., Vice President for Instructional Services at
Southwestern.
The primary intent of this new curriculum is to provide knowledge and
skills in the area of visual art that will prepare students to succeed
at a senior institution. However, it can also benefit people who want
to broaden their art skills by taking an individual class.
This new program will expose students to 3,000 years of art history
to give them a context in which to develop as artists. Contemporary
issues will be discussed, as will materials and techniques for producing
art.
The crux of this new program will be studio-based as students will spend
time creating art, considering alternative approaches and exhibiting
the final results.
this program, students will be challenged to be creative and productive,"
said SCC faculty member Roger Stephens, who holds a master's degree
in Painting and Drawing. "Classes in design, drawing, painting,
photography, printmaking and ceramics will expose them to a world of
visual art and allow them to explore new modes of self-expression."
Students will focus on studio skills, and they will have the opportunity
to have their work critiqued by faculty members and peers in their classes.
Upon
completion of the associate's degree from SCC and a bachelor's degree
in Fine Art or Art, an individual may pursue a career in teaching, become
a practicing artist or both.
