SYLVA
- The brightest day yet in Southwestern Community College students'
lives will be made even brighter by the presence of this state's second-highest
ranking public official. Lieutenant
Governor Beverly Perdue will serve as the commencement speaker for SCC's
commencement exercises at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Myers Auditorium on the
College's Jackson Campus. More than 250 students will earn their diplomas. "We
are proud to have the Lieutenant Governor of our state, the honorable
Beverly Perdue, as our graduation speaker," said Cecil Groves,
SCC President. "To have someone of her stature during this special
time of year says a lot about what our graduates have accomplished."
A former public school teacher, health care professional and co-chair
of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Lt. Gov. Perdue served five
terms in the Senate and two terms in the state House of Representatives
before being elected into her current role. During that time, she consistently
ranked as one of the most effective members of the North Carolina General
Assembly.
