SCC produces third-annual issue of arts and literature magazine

SYLVA - Founders, organizers, contributors to and readers of Southwestern Community College's art and literature magazine celebrated publication of the third issue of "The Milestone" with an awards luncheon last Thursday, May 3.

Printed each Spring, "The Milestone" showcases the creative expressions of artists and writers from throughout western North Carolina. Student editors and faculty advisors invite anyone who is interested to submit their original work by Dec. 1 of each year.

This year, first and second prizes were awarded to winners of the poetry, prose and artwork competitions. Following is a list of winners in each category:

1st in Art -Troy Brolin, Maggie Valley

1st in Poetry - Gene Lominac, Tuckasegee

1st in Prose - Jessica Bell, Otto

2nd in Art - Melanie Chenoa Harmon, Glenville

2nd in Poetry - Sabrina Hood, Dillsboro

2nd in Prose - Karen Gilfillan, Cashiers

Also honored were student editor Barbara Austin of Sylva as well as John Balentine, the Advertising and Graphic Design student who created the design that was selected to be this year's cover. One of the magazine's co-founders, Michael Revere of Cullowhee, provided a meal for all who attended.
