SCC Advertising and Graphic Design Students participate in Portfolio Day

SYLVA - The Advertising and Graphic Design program at Southwestern Community College held its annual Portfolio Day on Tuesday, May 8, at the Jackson Campus.

Eight second-year students presented their portfolios to an audience of peers, family and prospective employers. Those students were: Rachel Harris of Cherokee; Zac Clouse, Barnardsville; Karina Cortes, Cullowhee; Rhiannon Davis, Canton; Amy Jones, Whittier; Kerry Meier, Franklin; Barbara Murray, Sylva; and Sherry Peek, Franklin.

The presentations included paintings, drawings, graphic designs and sculptures that the students have produced as part of their coursework at SCC.

Roger Stephens, Advertising and Graphic Design Instructor said, "The work was so professional. I was excited about the quality and variety of the work and the professional attitude of the students. I'm sure they'll all be highly employable."

Stephens estimated that 10-15% of the program's graduates go on to higher education while an overwhelming 80% go on to be employed immediately.

"We have graduates that work in ad agencies, print shops, newspapers, tattoo parlors, engineering firms, department stores, publications departments of colleges and universities and book illustrators. We even have a graduate who designs graphics for a boat builder in Tennessee," said Stephens.

The Advertising and Graphic Design program is an Associate of Applied Science program that trains students in the areas of design, advertising, illustration, and digital and multimedia preparation of printed and electronic promotional materials.
