SYLVA
- Barb Putman, Southwestern Community College's director of academic
support, was recently selected to participate in the NC Community
College Leadership Program. Putman, a resident of Franklin, was
one of 34 participants selected from a field of 65 applicants
for this year's class.
The
training program includes an overview of leadership styles, an
in-depth look at each participant's style of leadership and skill
development in such areas as team building, conflict management,
problem solving, goal setting and career planning. Informational
topics include: local governance and budget issues, understanding
the changing community college system, leadership diversity and
advancement strategies.
Partially
funded by a grant for the NC Department of Community Colleges,
the program is beginning its fourteenth year. Participants represent
a diverse group who either have or seek opportunities for leadership
within their colleges. Emphasis is placed on the recruitment of
women and minorities. The program is sponsored by the NC Chapter
of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (NC-AAWCC),
a national organization working for the concerns of all women
who are employed in community and technical colleges.
