Putman Selected for NC Community College Leadership Program

Barb Putman, SCC's director of academic support, was one of 34 participants selected to participate in the NC Community College Leadership Program.

SYLVA - Barb Putman, Southwestern Community College's director of academic support, was recently selected to participate in the NC Community College Leadership Program. Putman, a resident of Franklin, was one of 34 participants selected from a field of 65 applicants for this year's class.

The training program includes an overview of leadership styles, an in-depth look at each participant's style of leadership and skill development in such areas as team building, conflict management, problem solving, goal setting and career planning. Informational topics include: local governance and budget issues, understanding the changing community college system, leadership diversity and advancement strategies.

Partially funded by a grant for the NC Department of Community Colleges, the program is beginning its fourteenth year. Participants represent a diverse group who either have or seek opportunities for leadership within their colleges. Emphasis is placed on the recruitment of women and minorities. The program is sponsored by the NC Chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (NC-AAWCC), a national organization working for the concerns of all women who are employed in community and technical colleges.
