NEWS RELEASE - NOVEMBER, 2004

7th Graders Begin College

Approximately 70 Jackson County 7th graders experienced their first day of college recently when they were inducted into the New Century Scholars program during a ceremony at Southwestern Community College. Students were selected for their effort in the classroom, good behavior and character, positive attitude and desire for education and potential success in college. New Century Scholars will provide last-dollar college tuition for the students when they complete their contract and graduate from high school. NCS students may enroll in SCC to work toward an associate degree and can go on to enroll at Western Carolina University to work toward a bachelor’s degree. The program is funded from local businesses, individuals, clubs, organizations and fundraisers.
