Smoky Mountain High School junior, Bari-Anne Ryzak, drew this year's winning "Tucker Duck" design. Along with featuring her design on this year's "Ducks on the Tuck" promotional materials, Ryzak was rewarded with $50.

The New Century Scholars program is a partnership among students, parents, public schools, the community, Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University. Students agree to perform community service, meet attendance and grade requirements, stay off drugs and alcohol and graduate from high school. Parents agree to encourage their child's goals and provide a supportive home learning environment. The schools provide support and assist with counseling. The community offers volunteer time and financial resources necessary for the tuition support of each scholar. The colleges help with fund raising and maintain close contact with students and parents through a series of activities. Students who successfully complete the New Century Scholars program are rewarded with two years of college, tuition-free at Southwestern, and if the student chooses to continue on with his studies, two years at WCU are also included.
