SCC and National Guard Partner in Distance Education

FRANKLIN - The National Guard recently partnered with Southwestern Community College to create a window to the world at SCC's Public Safety Training Complex in Franklin, NC.

As a part of their Distance Training Technology Project (DTTP), the National Guard provided the equipment necessary for an interactive (ITV) classroom, while SCC provided the space and technical expertise to install the equipment. The classroom will allow students in Franklin to see and interact with anyone, anywhere else in the world who has a similar system and access to the network.

"Our basic law enforcement training students could dial into a Homeland Security conference in Washington, D.C. and actively participate in the discussions," said Dennis Keough, SCC's director of distance learning. "Just imagine being able to participate, in real time, in a class that is being conducted from hundreds, even thousands, of miles away."

Locations of the DTTP classrooms are selected through a combined effort of the Department of the Army, Army Reserve, National Guard Bureau and Adjutant Generals to accommodate the needs and population of each state. The classrooms' content includes equipment and services including instructional content, media and connectivity tools.

"This classroom will allow the National Guard to improve military readiness through distance learning and the quality of life in communities where soldiers live," said Mark Landry, training manager for System Resource Applications, a contract company that provides training on the equipment.
