Southwestern
Community College announced today that Dr. Connie Haire,
Vice President, Student and Institutional Development,
has been assigned to head the new SCC Macon Center in
Franklin scheduled for opening the summer of 2006.
According to SCC president, Dr. Cecil Groves, Haire
has been with the College for 19 years. "In that
time Dr. Haire has served in various leadership roles,"
Groves said. "For the past six years, she has administered
student services and institutional development efforts
for the college and during this time, the College has
achieved record enrollment, the student services operation
has expanded and modernized, and the College has experienced
a major expansion in grants and gifts. She is an ideal
choice to lead our new Macon Campus."
On being named to the new post, Haire said, "I
welcome the opportunity to serve in this new capacity
and I'm excited about working with the people of Macon
County who have always been so supportive of the college.
I look forward to collaborating with them to determine
the educational services they want and need as the county
continues to grow."
Starting immediately, Haire will assume a steadily increasing
oversight role in the development of the organizational
and operational components for the new campus, transitioning
to full-time status as the head of the new Macon Campus
starting July 1, 2005. Until that time, she will also
maintain her responsibilities as V.P., Student and Institutional
Development. In this position Haire leads and supervises
24 employees in the coordination of comprehensive student
services, including admissions, enrollment management,
financial aid, records/registration, counseling and
student activities. Over the past five years, using
an enrollment management model and targeted marketing,
she led the college to a steady four to five percent
annual increase in enrollment. She managed the college's
New Century Scholars Program in the three-county service
area and directed the NCS Expansion Project for the
Governor's Office with Appalachian Regional Commission
funds. She also served as co-chairman of the Rural Community
College Initiative with Haywood and Tri-County community
colleges, a collaborative effort to improve the economy
of the region.
Haire also established a comprehensive resource development
department with grants activities, college foundation,
and public relations and marketing. Some $9 million
in grants and approximately $900,000 in private funds
were secured during her last five years. Carrying onward
with the New Century Scholars Program, she helped secure
$668,000 funding from the ARC to expand the program
which now annually inducts approximately 140 new students
with locally funded financial support (NCS now has 780
students in grades 7-12).
From 1997 until 1999, Haire held the position of Dean
for Instructional Advancement. In this role she served
as Community Liaison with public schools and the business
community to develop and coordinate the college's participation
in workforce development through the One Stop Career
Center and the Job Ready Partnership for the School
to Work program.
Also serving at that time as Executive Director of the
SCC Foundation, Haire created an Investment Policy with
the Foundation Board of Directors which led to diversification
of the holdings of the Foundation.
Haire joined the college in 1986 as Director of Resource
Development, a position she held until 1997. In that
time she initiated the Faculty/Staff Mini-Grant program
through the SCC Foundation and coordinated the creation
of the New Century Scholars program in collaboration
with public school partners in three counties. A total
of 315 students were inducted in the first three years
and approximately $187,000 was raised locally and another
$10,000 in grant funds was secured to support the program
under her guidance.
Active in a number of organizations in the community,
Haire has served on the Advantage West Regional Economic
Development Commission since 2002. She has also served
on the NC Rural Economic Development Center Board of
Directors since 1992 and served as a member of the Executive
Committee from 1994 through 1995. She also has served
on the Board of Directors of Western North Carolina
Tomorrow since 1986 and served as chairperson from 1992
through 1995.
Haire earned an Ed.D. in Adult and Community College
Education from N.C. State University, an M.A. Ed. from
WCU and a B.S. from Erskine College.
Haire will relocate her office to Macon County sometime
after January, 2006. As head of the new Macon Campus,
Dr. Haire's new title will be Vice President - Macon
Campus.
