| On
Tuesday, March 15, take a trip back in time during
a special slide show at noon in the auditorium of
Southwestern Community College’s Balsam Center.
George Frizzell, head of special collections at
WCU, will present a slide show on the History of
Jackson County which will include scenes like this
open, undeveloped field in Cullowhee, pictured about
100 years ago. The only building visible is the
spire of St. David’s Episcopal Church. The
Western Carolina University football field and the
Ramsey Regional Activity Center currently occupy
much of that field. |
George
Frizzell, head of special collections at Western Carolina
University, will give a history of the county, traveling
town-by-town, and featuring people, places and buildings
from 1890 to 1950.
“Viewers will get a sense of how things developed
in the county,” said Frizzell, who received his
master’s in American History from WCU. Frizzell
has been with special collections, a unit of WCU’s
Hunter Library, since 1982. His unit is devoted to collecting
and making accessible materials that document the history
of our region.
Frizzell’s presentation is in conjunction with
SCC’s 40th anniversary. A day-long celebration
will be held on the Jackson campus Saturday, April 2,
from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
