Tourism
presentation at SCC August 23
"Natives,
Newcomers and Summer People: Tourism, History and Culture
in North Carolina" will be the subject of a presentation
at Southwestern Community College on Tuesday, August
23.
Richard D. Starnes, Ph.D., will be the presenter. Starnes,
an assistant professor of history at Western Carolina
University, is the author of Southern Journeys: Tourism,
History and Culture in the Modern South, is the founder
and director of the WNC Oral History Project which seeks
to record the memories and experiences of the region's
history for future generations.
"With a breathtaking coastline, majestic mountains,
and famous Piedmont resorts, it's no wonder that tourism
is one of the most important segments of the state's
economy," Starnes said. "In fact tourism has
become more than a mode of economic development and
is now an important force in shaping local culture.
"Through this presentation, made possible by a
grant from the NC Humanities Council, we will examine
the history of tourism and tourists in shaping the state's
history and culture. And we'll look at the broader social
and economic implications of a tourism economy."
Free to the public, the presentation will be held in
Room 201 of Bradford Hall on the SCC Jackson County
campus. For more information, phone the Continuing Education
Office at SCC at 586.4091, Ext. 426.
