Conrad
Burrell of Sylva has been elected for
his sixth term as chairman of the Southwestern
Community College Board of Trustees and Melvin
Penland of Franklin has been elected
for a third term as vice chairman.
Burrell, retired Jackson County Register of Deeds,
has served on the SCC board since 1996. A member
of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners,
he is also a member of the NC Department of Transportation
for the 14th Division. He resides in Sylva with
his wife, Juanita.
Penland, a retired president of Franklin Insurance
Agency, has served on SCC's board since 1997.
He is married to the former Sarah Corbin and they
have two sons, Michael Penland of Tennessee and
Steven Penland of Franklin.
Since its founding in 1968, the SCC Board of Trustees
has been a vital component of leadership at the
college. Representing a wide range of professions
and different political backgrounds, the board
governs SCC within the framework of the Community
Colleges Act of the General Statutes of North
Carolina.
