Melvin “Pete” Penland was recently reappointed by the Macon County commissioners to serve a third four-year term on the Southwestern Community College Board of Trustees.
Penland, a native of Franklin and a retired president of Franklin Insurance Agency, has served on SCC’s board since 1997 and currently holds the office of vice-chairman.

“I was very pleased with the reappointment of Mr. Penland to the SCC Board. His strong business experience and advocacy for quality education are a recognized and welcomed addition to our Board,” said Cecil Groves, president of SCC.

Conrad Burrell, chairman of the SCC Board, noted, “Pete’s business acumen, leadership skills and knowledge of Macon County, combined with his dedication to the community college mission have been invaluable to the College. I am very pleased with his reappointment to the SCC Board of Trustees.”

Penland is married to the former Sarah Corbin and they have two sons, Michael Penland of Tennessee and Steven Penland of Franklin.

SCC is governed by a local board of trustees within the framework of the Community Colleges Act, Chapter 115D of the General Statutes of North Carolina. The board consists of 14 trustees – five appointed by the county commissioners, four appointed by the Board of Education, and four appointed by the governor of North Carolina. The SCC Student Leadership Association president serves as an ex-officio member.
