Former
Chief Robert Youngdeer featured at Veteran's Day Celebration
“I’m
proud my blood is part of the red in our flag,”
World War II veteran Robert Youngdeer of Cherokee, left,
tells fellow Marine Jeremy Powell of Cullowhee and others
during Southwestern Community College’s Veteran’s
Day Celebration Thursday, Nov. 10. At the Battle of
Guadalcanal, Youngdeer, a former Chief of the Eastern
Band of Cherokee, was shot in the left nostril by a
bullet that pierced his right ear and sliced his tongue.
During his presentation, sponsored by SCC’s Native
American Society, Youngdeer paid tribute to the late
Wesley Driver and Sheridan Smith, and other Cherokee
who were killed in battle.
The
ROTC from Cherokee High School
presented the colors.
