Duck
race to benefit New Century Scholars - April 29
Hundreds
of ducks will be dropped from the Depot Street Bridge
in Dillsboro to see which one makes it to the finish
line first at Western Builders.
The little yellow rubber duckies, which go for $5 each,
raise money to benefit Jackson County New Century Scholars.
This year's 6th annual Ducks on the Tuck launches at
3 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Local fishermen
will release the ducks into the Tuckaseigee from the
little wooden bridge across the railroad tracks and
then catch them as they float down the river to Western
Builders.
The
owner of the winning duck will receive the grand prize,
which is a bright yellow 2005 Marshin B-05/MH50 Scooter
donated by Riverside Auto Sales of Sylva. The scooter,
which gets approximately 110 miles to the gallon, comes
complete with helmet. Other prizes include gift certificates
to local restaurants, a remote-control boat from Radio
Shack, theatre tickets, stays at local motels and inns,
tickets to Dollywood and gift certificates to local
merchants.
Tickets are available at any of the public schools,
from Macon Bank, City Lights Bookstore or Southwestern
Community College Foundation director Sonja Haynes.
Winners do not have to be present to win.
The
winning artwork on this year's Ducks on the Tuck poster
was created by Malissa Gispert of Smoky Mountain High
School. SMHS student Michael Stephens had his winning
artwork printed on the Ducks on the Tuck t-shirts, which
are available at Cullowhee Valley School for $10.
Brendon Manchester of Cullowhee Valley School had the
winning design for grades K-5 and Germain Fuentes of
Fairview was the winner in grades 6-8.
All proceeds benefit New Century Scholars, celebrating
its 10th anniversary this year of providing young people
incentives to stay in school, to grow intellectually
and in self-esteem and to achieve a guaranteed college
education. For more information, call Patty Wilson,
Jackson County NCS director, at 293-5667.
