SCC students teach elementary students web skills
Students in Jodi Marr and Jessica Cline's Multi-Age
classroom (Clubhouse Academy) at West Elementary School
in Swain County recently needed help putting information
about a class project on the Internet. They got it from
another group of students, the Information Technology
and Web Technology students at Southwestern Community
College.

The
younger students started the year with an annual thematic
unit on Wild Wonders of the World. The class was divided
into 10 groups of three with each group focused on one
wonder of the world. Each group had at least one or
two second graders and one or two third graders. Themes
included the Grand Canyon, the Great Wall of China,
Stonehenge, and the giant redwoods.
Technology is a major focus for the third grade at West
Elementary and each 3rd grader has a laptop. Marr and
Cline decided the students should integrate the Wild
Wonders of the World with technology and this is where
Southwestern Community College comes in.
Jessica Cline is married to Scott Cline, program coordinator
for the Computer Information Technology and Web Technology
programs at SCC. She asked him if his students would
be interested in helping her students put their research
and pictures of the Wild Wonders of the World on the
Internet. Scott checked with his students, got volunteers
and set up a time for them to visit the elementary class.
On the day of the visit, the elementary students chose
their colors and the layout designs and the college
students worked one-on-one with each group in hands-on
work sessions to teach them how to create their own
web pages.
Later, Jodi Marr commented on the success of the project,
"What a great opportunity for our students to interact
with college students and create web pages! They had
such a good time and were so enthusiastic about all
they learned."
"Our students were so excited about creating a
web page," Jessica Cline added. "Scott and
the students were very helpful and informative. Later,
the children enjoyed sharing their web pages during
our school-wide thematic unit. We appreciate the time
and talent shared."
The students were equally enthusiastic about their experience
with the college students. "I really liked them
coming to make web pages with us," Jake Thomas
said. "I would like to thank them for taking the
time to come teach us about websites. Our group's person
taught us a lot about making a website for the Great
Barrier Reef."
The project was a win-win proposition according to Scott
Cline.
"This was a great opportunity for our students
too," he said. "The Web Technology and Computer
Information Technology students at SCC got the opportunity
to teach using the skills they learned in the IT Programs
at SCC. Teaching is one of the best ways to learn in
depth and give a solid foundation to your skills. It's
an awarding experience."
Volunteering for the project from SCC were, Alex Moore,
Cory Williams, Dmytro Tomchuk, Lazar Bannister, Mikki
Gingrich, Robert Stevens, Stacy Bumgarner, Zane Dockery.
