Art Enrichment for Youth

Kids from Jackson, Macon and Swain counties in age groups 9 through 11 and 12 through 14 can explore new and old craft traditions this summer in two week-long programs being offered by the Southwestern Community College's Heritage Arts Enrichment Program for Youth.

Scheduled June 19 through 23, both programs will meet each day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a pot luck dinner set for 5:30 on Friday to celebrate and show off student work. The classes will be taught at the SCC Swain Center located five miles west of Bryson City at NC 28 and 74.

Classes will run in basket weaving, loom weaving, clay, sewing, painting and drawing, Scottish dancing, mixed bag and square dancing.

The Enrichment Program for Youth is offered through a collaborative effort among Southwestern Community College, the NC Extension Service and the 4-H programs of Jackson, Macon and Swain counties and the Qualla Boundary. Cost for the program is $187.50, with a few $100 scholarships available. For additional information, contact Carolyn Rorrer at SCC at 488.6413 or Nira Franklin at 488.3848.
