Singing
President
He
may not make American Idol, but Southwestern Community
College President Cecil Groves, third from left, was
the crowd's Penny War Idol at SCC's Spring Fling Thursday,
April 20, on the Jackson campus. Faculty, staff and
students contributed pennies for their choice to sing
with the band Commonfolk and Groves came out on top
over contenders Peter Buck, Gary Dillard, Barrie Rogers
and Ellen Heim. Groves surprised the crowd with his
rendition of Rocky Top as he was accompanied by, from
left, band members Bradley Adams, Jeff Redman, Aaron
Plantenberg, Isaac Deal and Jimmy Leatherwood. "I
didn't realize we had such a singing president,"
said Karen Reed, coordinator of the Penny War Idol contest
which raised $236 for the Southwestern Sizzlers team's
participation in the Jackson County Relay For Life.
