Collecting Wisdom at Great Teacher
Retreat
Based
on the premises that teachers learn teaching best from
one another, a group of Southwestern Community College
instructors recently took part in a three-day professional
development workshop March 23-25. David Gottshall, founder
of the Great Teacher Movement, conducted the workshop,
along with SCC facilitators Rudy Beharrysingh, Peter
Buck, Linda Dyke and Laura Pennington. Gottshall incorporated
creative exercises by mixing teachers of diverse teaching
fields, experience levels and interests. From left,
Bob Harrison, Ron Poor and Wanda Morris were among the
SCC faculty members taking part in the workshop held
at the Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville. The
Great Teacher Movement is a grass-roots faculty movement
focusing on performance in the classroom and on the
nature of the great teacher. The emphasis is on the
art of teaching itself, rather than on the teaching
of specific disciplines, according to Gottshall who
said, “The collective wisdom, experience and creativity
of any group of practicing educators far surpasses that
of the individual expert.”
