Board
chair and vice chair reappointed

Conrad Burrell of
Sylva has been elected for his seventh
term as chairman of the Southwestern
Community College Board of Trustees
and Melvin Penland of Franklin has
been elected for a fourth term as
vice chairman.
Burrell, a retired Jackson County
register of deeds, has served on
the SCC board since 1996. A member
of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners,
he is also a member of the N.C.
Department of Transportation, representing
the 14th Division.
Penland, a retired president of
Franklin Insurance Agency, has served
on the SCC board since 1997.
"I am very pleased that we
will have the continued leadership
of Conrad Burrell and Melvin Penland
on the board," Dr. Cecil Groves,
SCC president said. "Their
presence is especially important
as we move toward finalization of
construction of the Macon Campus
and begin work toward realization
of an important new facility on
the Jackson campus."
The SCC Board of Trustees governs
the college within the framework
of the Community Colleges Act of
the General Statues of North Carolina.
