Jeremiah Chatham of
Sylva is the recipient of the Barbara
Frogge Scholarship at Southwestern
Community College for the 2006-
2007 academic year.
Making the announcement,
SCC Foundation director, Sonja Haynes,
said, “We are very pleased
to award this scholarship to Jeremiah.
He is exemplary of what this scholarship
is all about. He is a young man
who had been out of high school
for a few years, has attended SCC
for at least one semester and is
currently enrolled as a College
Transfer major. He also admirably
met the academic requirements for
the scholarship.”
The Barbara Frogge Scholarship,
established at SCC in 2002, provides
the recipient with a $300 award
each semester. Frogge served as
a psychology and religion instructor
at the college for 18 years before
her death early the same year. She
was well liked and respected by
her colleagues and students, according
to Terry Tolle, an instructor at
SCC.
"Barbara was loved by students
and fellow faculty members alike,”
he said. “Her deep concern
for students not only enabled her
to be a wonderful teacher but also
a friend, counselor and mentor to
many. Countless lives were touched,
changed and encouraged by her unselfish
giving, not only of her time but
her total self, making each individual’s
ability to succeed in life her priority.”
The purpose of the Barbara Frogge
Scholarship is to assist worthy
students who, after having been
out of high school a few years,
endeavor to improve their lives
by seeking higher education and
attending SCC as a College Transfer
student.
